Chapter 2 — The Husband Who Chose His Mother

Daniel came to my clinic two days later.

He didn’t come to apologize.

He came to control the damage.

He walked into my private office wearing the same expensive watch I bought him for our anniversary.

The same man who watched me fall to the floor.

The same man who watched his mother attack me.

“Evie, we need to talk.”

I didn’t look up from my paperwork.

“No. You need to explain.”

He sighed.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

Those words hurt more than the bat.

Bigger than it is.

I looked at him.

“Your mother broke my ribs.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“She lost control.”

“People lose control when they throw a glass. They don’t pick up a baseball bat.”

Silence.

Then he said the words that ended our marriage.

“You know how much stress you put on her?”

I slowly closed the file in front of me.

“My stress?”

“Yes. You embarrassed her.”

I almost laughed.

After eight years of paying her bills.

After renovating her house.

After funding her vacations.

I was the one who embarrassed her.

I stood up.

“Daniel, you are not here because you love me.”

His eyes moved away.

“You’re here because you’re scared.”

He said nothing.

Because I was right.

That night, my attorney sent me something.

Bank records.

Thousands of dollars.

Not just from me.

From other people.

Margaret had been collecting money from multiple family members.

She wasn’t struggling.

She was running a system.

A system built on guilt.

And Daniel wasn’t her victim.

He was her partner.
