Chapter 18 - THE ESCAPE ATTEMPT

Elena slid her hand behind her back, desperately searching for her car door handle.

"I don't want the Vance money, Ethan," Elena said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Take it all."

"I just want to be left alone with my daughter."

Ethan let out a quiet, mocking laugh that sent chills down Elena’s spine.

"Oh, it’s not just about the money, Elena," Ethan whispered, taking two fast steps forward.

"You destroyed my mother’s legacy."

"You put the Vance name in the dirt."

"My family may be corrupt, but we protect our own."

Elena pulled her car door open and threw herself into the driver’s seat, slamming the door shut and locking it.

Ethan lunged forward, slamming his silver knife violently against the driver’s side glass.

SPIDERWEB CRACK!

The heavy glass cracked, but held.

Ethan grinned maniacally through the shattered window, raising the knife to strike again.

Elena jammed the key into the ignition, threw the car into reverse, and slammed her foot onto the gas pedal.

The engine roared to life.

The car shot backward, clipping Ethan’s shoulder and knocking him to the oil-stained concrete floor.

Elena spun the steering wheel, shifted into drive, and sped out of the parking garage toward the street.

She pulled her phone from her purse, her fingers flying across the screen to dial Marcus Kane’s private number.

The phone rang twice.

"Marcus! Help me!" Elena screamed into the receiver.

"There's another twin! His name is Ethan! He just tried to kill me in the parking garage!"

Static buzzed softly over the line.

A voice answered from the speaker, but it wasn't Marcus Kane.

"Attorney Kane is currently indisposed, Elena," a cold, female voice replied over the phone.

Elena’s heart slammed into her throat.

She recognized that voice instantly.

It was Dr. Evans—the chief psychiatrist from the St. Jude Sanatorium.

"What have you done to Marcus?!" Elena shrieked, swerving her car through the city traffic.

"Mr. Kane was asking too many questions about Ethan Vance’s medical records," Dr. Evans said smoothly over the phone.

"He is currently resting in Cell 402."

"And if you ever want to see him alive again, you will bring the forty million dollars to the abandoned docks at midnight."

"Alone."
