Chapter 10 - THE UNEXPECTED ALLY

Elena thrashed wildly, driving her elbow back into her attacker’s ribs.

The man grunted, but his grip remained like an iron vise.

"Shut up if you want to live!" a harsh, raspy voice growled into her ear.

Elena stopped struggling.

The man slowly turned her around in the dark.

It was Jax.

The motorcycle racer who had just shot out her tires and chased her off the cliff.

Elena raised the crowbar, her eyes wild with hatred.

"Touch me and I’ll kill you!" she hissed under her breath.

Jax didn't draw his gun.

Instead, he held up his hands, showing his bare, mud-covered palms.

"I’m not here to hurt you, Elena," Jax said, his voice deep and rough.

"You tried to run us off a cliff!" Elena whispered violently.

"I shot the tire so Victoria’s men in the second car wouldn't execute you on the spot!" Jax revealed.

"I knew Sarah’s truck would slide into the trees instead of going over the main drop!"

Elena stared at him in utter disbelief.

"Why would you do that?"

"You work for Victoria!"

Jax reached into his leather vest and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper.

It was the note the eight-year-old boy had handed him at the diner days ago.

"The boy at the diner... he was my son," Jax said, his eyes glinting with raw pain in the dark.

"Victoria took him from me twelve years ago when I went to prison."

"She used him to blackmail me into doing her dirty work all these years."

"She told me if I ever disobeyed her, she would make sure my boy vanished forever."

Elena’s heart pounded.

"Where is he now?"

"He’s safe," Jax said softly.

"Marcus Kane found him yesterday."

Elena gasped. "Marcus Kane? But the doctor said—"

"The doctor lied to make you think you were crazy," Jax interrupted.

"Marcus is waiting at the bottom of the mountain with the State Police."

"But Victoria has the local sheriffs in her pocket."

"They are already on their way up here to escort her private motorcade to the airport."

Jax looked at the glass mansion, his jaw clenching tight.

"If she gets into that sprinter van with Lily, you will never see her again."

"What do we do?" Elena asked, her hand tightening around the heavy crowbar.

Jax pulled a heavy tactical knife from his boot and handed it to her.
