Chapter 1 - THE SILENCE AFTER THE BLOW

The heavy crystal chandeliers trembled beneath the vaulted ceiling of the grand ballroom.
Silence descended upon the two hundred elite guests like a suffocating blanket.
Whispers died in the throats of billionaires, politicians, and high-society aristocrats.
In the center of the marble floor, Victoria Vance stumbled backward, clutching her reddened cheek.
Her manicured hand shook against her bruised skin.
Her eyes bulged with pure, unadulterated venom.
Elena stood over her, breathing heavily in her pearl-embroidery white gown.
Her knuckles were white.
Her chest heaved with years of suppressed rage.
Beneath her trembling body, six-year-old Lily sobbed softly into the folds of Elena’s dress.
The child’s small hands clung to the silk as if it were her only anchor in a cruel world.
Elena pressed her palm over Lily’s head, pulling her deeper into her chest.
"Touch her again," Elena’s voice sliced through the hall, low and deadly.
"And I will rip your empire down with my bare hands."
Victoria gasped, her lips quivering in outrage.
"Guards!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking with fury.
"Seize this psycho!"
"Throw her out on the street where she belongs!"
Two burly security guards stepped forward from the shadow of the velvet curtains.
Before they could reach Elena, a shadow crossed the marble floor.
Julian Vance stepped into the light.
He was the groom.
The heir to the Vance fortune.
His face was deathly pale.
His dark eyes flickered between his mother’s bleeding lip and his bride’s tear-streaked face.
"Stop!" Julian ordered, his voice echoing against the tall pillars.
Victoria stared at her son in disbelief.
"Julian! Look at what she did to me!"
"She hit your mother in front of the entire city!"
Julian did not look at his mother.
He stared directly into Elena’s eyes.
Elena saw the fear in his gaze.
Not fear for her.
Fear of the truth.
"Elena," Julian whispered, taking a slow step forward.
"Give Lily to the nanny."
"We can discuss this in private."
Elena let out a cold, bitter laugh.
"Private?"
"So you can sweep another one of your family’s crimes under the rug?"
She lifted Lily into her arms, standing tall despite the weight of her heavy wedding gown.
"You knew, didn't you?" Elena asked, her voice deadly quiet.
Julian choked on his words.
"knew what?"
"You knew your mother locked my child in the cold basement while we were walking down the aisle!"
Gasps erupted through the crowd.
The elite guests exchanged frantic, shocked glances.
Victoria’s eyes narrowed into slits.
"She’s lying!" Victoria roared, standing up with the help of a butler.
"The girl is unstable!"
"She is trying to humiliate the Vance family!"
Elena looked around the room at the ocean of wealthy, cold faces.
None of them cared about a terrified child.
They only cared about the scandal.
Elena backed away toward the grand glass entrance.
"This wedding is over," Elena declared softly.
May you like
"And your nightmare has just begun."
She turned her back on the Vance empire and walked out into the pouring rain.
