Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail

By mid-afternoon, the financial fallout began hitting the Vance family like an artillery strike.

Marcus and I sat in a private conference room on the fortieth floor of his downtown law firm. Across the glass table sat a forensic accountant named Sarah Lin, who had spent the last eight hours dissecting the digital files seized from the cellar vault.

"It's worse than we thought," Sarah said, sliding a thick ledger across the table. "The Vance Vineyard hasn't turned a legitimate profit in nearly seven years. They were heavily leveraged with predatory private loans, and Charles was using forged signatures to take out secondary mortgages on properties owned by Adrian’s and Julian’s romantic partners."

"Did Adrian forge my signature on anything?" I asked, a cold knot tightening in my stomach.

"He tried," Sarah replied, pulling up a scanned document on her monitor. "Three months ago, Adrian submitted an application for a four-million-dollar equity line of credit against your condo. He used a fake notary stamp and forged your signature."

"Why wasn't the loan processed?"

"Because your credit freeze caught it," Marcus smiled faintly. "Your tech-executive paranoia saved your life, Claire. When the bank sent the two-factor identity verification to your private encrypted email, Adrian couldn't bypass it. That’s why they staged the dinner last night."

"They realized they couldn't steal it digitally," I breathed, touching the bandage on my forehead. "So they tried to intimidate me into signing it over willingly in front of the whole family."

"Exactly," Marcus said. "If you signed the deed transfer, Eleanor becomes the legal owner. They take out the equity loan, pay off the cartel-backed private lenders threatening Charles, and move you into a rental in Oakland while draining twenty-eight hundred a month from your checking account to keep Eleanor in luxury."

"And what happens when I eventually figure out the fraud and threaten divorce?"

Sarah looked at me with grave eyes. "You would have suffered an 'unfortunate accident' on the vineyard property, just like Rebecca Torres. Adrian would inherit your entire estate as the surviving spouse, and the family’s debts would be cleared forever."

A cold shudder ran down my spine. The sheer calculation of it was breathtaking. Every compliment Adrian had ever given me, every romantic weekend getaway, every dinner with his parents—it was all part of a systematic, predatory hunting ritual.

"Marcus," I said, leaning forward. "I want to file for an immediate emergency divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty, felony assault, and fraud. Freeze every asset tied to the Vance name. If there is a single dollar left in their accounts, I want it seized."

"Already in motion," Marcus said. "The civil court judge signed the injunction an hour ago. But there's another problem."

"What problem?"

"Eleanor disappeared from your apartment building this morning," Marcus said quietly. "She didn't check into a hotel. She didn't contact her attorney. And thirty minutes ago, her GPS ankle monitor went offline near the marina."

My heart skipped a beat. "She’s running."

"Or," Marcus warned, looking out over the foggy San Francisco skyline, "she’s tying up loose ends."
