Chapter 6 - Rebecca

The silence in the cellar was suffocating.
"Rebecca Torres was Adrian's first fiancée," Maya said, her voice cutting through the damp chill. "Five years ago, the family announced that Rebecca had packed her bags in the middle of the night, drained her own savings account, and run off to Europe because she couldn't handle the pressure of marrying into high society."
I felt the blood in my veins turn to pure ice.
I remembered Adrian telling me that story on our third date. We had been sitting in an upscale bistro in Napa, sipping overpriced Cabernet, and he had looked at me with soulful, wounded eyes, explaining how his ex-fiancée had broken his heart, stolen from him, and vanished without a trace. I had felt sorry for him. I had comforted him.
It was all a lie.
"She didn't run off, did she?" I asked, looking from Maya to Adrian, whose face was completely devoid of color.
"Rebecca figured out what they were doing," Maya explained, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "She was an accountant. Charles brought her in to audit the vineyard's books before the wedding, thinking she would just rubber-stamp their filings. But she found the forged deeds. She found out the Vance family was bankrupt and surviving entirely by liquidating assets stolen from women Adrian and Julian brought into the family."
"That's enough!" Eleanor shrieked, stumbling down the stairs, her expensive makeup smeared with sweat and tears. "She was a thief! She tried to blackmail us!"
"She threatened to go to the FBI," Maya continued, ignoring her mother-in-law completely. "Adrian got into an argument with her in the guest cottage. He lost his temper. He hit her with a heavy bronze statuette. Just like he hit Claire tonight."
My stomach lurched violently. I reached out and braced myself against the cold brick wall. The throbbing in my head intensified, a sickening reminder of how close that porcelain plate had come to ending my life.
"Where is she, Charles?" Detective Reynolds demanded, stepping out of the vault, the autopsy file gripped tightly in her gloved hand. "Why do you have an unofficial autopsy report from an unlicensed private coroner in your private vault?"
Charles stared at the floor, his jaw working silently, refusing to utter a single word.
"They paid a private medical examiner to cremate her body under a false name," Maya whispered. "Her ashes are buried under the new Cabernet vines on the North Ridge. And every single asset she owned—her trust fund, her condo in Pacific Heights, her investment portfolio—was systematically drained through Charles’s shell companies."
"And that was the plan for me," I said, the horrific puzzle finally snapping into place.
They hadn't just wanted my money to live in luxury. The Vance empire was a hollow shell rotting from the inside out, drowning in millions of dollars of debt and legal liabilities. They needed my tech salary and my multi-million-dollar real estate to keep the creditors at bay.
And if I resisted, Adrian was meant to break me. If that didn't work, they would eliminate me just like they eliminated Rebecca.
"Deputy," Detective Reynolds said, her voice shaking with barely controlled rage, "call the coroner's office, the District Attorney, and the State Police. I want crime scene tape around the entire perimeter of this property. No one leaves. Call search and rescue with ground-penetrating radar for the North Ridge."
She turned to Adrian and Charles.
"Charles Vance, Adrian Vance, Julian Vance—you are all under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, tampering with evidence, and grand larceny."
"Claire, please!" Adrian sobbed as the deputy dragged him toward the stairs. Tears of pure self-pity streamed down his cheeks. "Claire, baby, you know I love you! I was under so much pressure! My dad forced me to do it! Tell them to drop the charges!"

I looked at the man I had shared a bed with for two years. I felt no sorrow. I felt no heartbreak. Only a searing, absolute disgust.
"I'm going to watch you rot in prison, Adrian," I said coldly.
