Chapter 2 - The Red Line

"My husband just attacked me," I stated with absolute clarity, staring directly into Adrian's widening eyes. "He struck me in the side of the head with a heavy dinner plate. I am bleeding heavily from my temple."
"Ma'am, are you in a safe location?" the dispatcher asked, her tone shifting immediately into high gear. "Is the assailant still armed?"
"He's standing three feet away from me," I replied. "Inside 404 Estate Lane, the Vance Vineyard estate. There are twenty adult witnesses in the room."
"Claire, hang that damn phone up right now!" Eleanor hissed, bolting out of her chair with an agility that completely contradicted her claims of failing health. She rounded the table, her manicured fingers clawing at the air toward my device. "You are completely blowing this out of proportion!"
I stepped back, keeping my back to the heavy oak sideboard and angling the phone away from her reach. "Dispatch, his mother is currently trying to interfere with my emergency call. Send law enforcement and an ambulance immediately."
"Officers are en route, ma'am. Stay on the line with me," the operator instructed. "Do not engage."
"Hang it up, Claire!" Charles roared, standing at his full height, his commanding CEO voice booming through the vaulted dining room. "We handle family business internally. You do not invite the county sheriff onto my property!"
"This stopped being family business the second your son smashed a plate over my skull," I snapped back, pressing a linen napkin against the gash. The white cloth turned entirely crimson within seconds. "And don't take another step toward me, Charles, or I'll tell her you're an accessory."
Adrian took a menacing step forward, his fists balled at his sides. "Give me the fucking phone, Claire. You think you can ruin my career over a lovers' quarrel? You think anyone is going to take your word over the entire Vance family?"
"I dare you to step closer," I whispered. "Come on, Adrian. Show the county cops what you do when you don't get your way."
He hesitated, his boots digging into the Persian rug. For the first time in our two-year marriage, he saw zero fear in my eyes. He saw the cold, calculated look of an executive who was ready to burn the whole boardroom down.
Suddenly, a heavy wooden chair scraped violently against the floorboards near the corner of the table.
Maya, Adrian’s quiet, perpetually timid sister-in-law, stood up so fast her water goblet overturned, spilling across the polished wood. She had spent the entire evening staring at her lap, shrinking whenever her husband Julian or Charles spoke.
Now, she stepped straight into the open space between Adrian and me.
"That's enough, Adrian," Maya said, her voice shaking like a leaf, but her feet planted firmly. "Step back."
Adrian looked at her like she was an insect. "Maya, sit your ass back down. This doesn't concern you."
"Don't touch her," Maya repeated, looking directly at him with a strange, haunting defiance. "You're not doing this again. Not in front of me."
The room froze. Charles’s face morphed from furious authority to raw, pale panic.
"Maya," Charles warned in a chillingly low voice. "Be very careful."
Maya didn't look at Charles. She turned her head slightly toward me, her eyes wide with a terrifying blend of horror and desperate hope.
In the distance, the faint, wailing howl of police sirens cut through the rolling hills of the vineyard, growing louder with every passing second.

Maya leaned toward my ear and whispered six words that chilled the blood in my veins:
"Tell them to check the basement."
