CHAPTER 6 THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The fire destroyed three evidence boxes.
But not everything.
One photograph survived.
It had slipped behind a steel cabinet.
It showed my mother entering a lakeside hotel.
Beside her was a younger Margaret.
Behind them stood a woman I recognized immediately.
Brenda’s mother.
Clara Cole.
Brenda had claimed her mother died when she was a child.
That was another lie.
Evelyn traced Clara to a private clinic in Vermont.
She had been living under another name for nineteen years.
We flew there that night.
Andrew insisted on coming.
“You’re not protecting me,” I told him.
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because my family did this.”
“That didn’t bother you yesterday.”
His face tightened.
“I know what I did.”
“No.”
“You know what you lost.”
He accepted the blow without defending himself.
At the clinic, Clara refused to see Andrew.
She agreed to see me.
She was thin.
Gray-haired.
Terrified.
The moment she saw my face, she began crying.
“You look like Elena.”
“My mother?”
Clara nodded.
“She tried to save us all.”
“From Margaret?”
“From Gabriel.”
Andrew’s father.
Clara explained that Gabriel ran a financial network through luxury hotels, charities, and family companies.
My mother discovered it.
Margaret helped hide it.
Clara kept records.
When my mother planned to expose them, Gabriel arranged the crash.
My father was supposed to be in the car too.
“Why wasn’t he?” I asked.
Clara looked away.
“Because Margaret warned him.”
I felt the room tighten around me.
“My father knew?”
“He knew enough to stay away.”
I stood abruptly.
“No.”
“He chose you over your mother.”
The door opened.
Rafael entered.
He must have followed us.
His face confirmed everything.
I stared at him.
“You knew she was in danger.”
“I tried to stop her from going.”
“You let her go alone.”
“I thought they would frighten her.”
“I never believed—”
“You believed enough to stay home.”
He reached for me.
I stepped back.
All my life, I had trusted him completely.
Now I saw the cost of his silence.
Andrew stood in the doorway.
For once, he did not speak.
Clara pulled a small brass key from beneath her pillow.
“Elena left this with me.”
“What does it open?”
“A deposit box in New York.”
She pressed it into my hand.
“Inside is the proof.”
Before I could ask more—
A window shattered.
Andrew threw himself over me.
Glass exploded across the room.
May you like
A bullet struck the wall.
Someone had found us.
