CHAPTER 18 MY FATHER’S FINAL LIE

My father aimed the gun at the ledger.

“Give it to me.”

My mother stared at him.

“Rafael.”

His face broke.

“I did everything for this family.”

“You hid children,” I said.

“I hid evidence.”

“That is not better.”

He stepped into the ballroom.

“Gabriel forced me to handle the charities.”

“When I tried to leave, he threatened Mariana.”

My mother’s voice shook.

“So you helped him.”

“I saved our daughter.”

“No,” I said.

“You taught yourself that every betrayal was protection.”

The words struck him.

Andrew moved slightly between us.

Rafael noticed.

“You stay out of this.”

Andrew did not move.

“You pointed a gun at her.”

“You hit her.”

“Yes.”

Andrew’s voice remained calm.

“And I will spend the rest of my life ashamed of it.”

“What will you do with your shame?”

My father’s hand trembled.

Sirens sounded outside.

I had activated the silent alarm before opening the compartment.

Rafael looked at me.

“You called them.”

“Yes.”

“I’m your father.”

“And she was my mother.”

He looked at Elena.

All the years between them seemed to collapse.

“I loved you,” he whispered.

She cried quietly.

“Not enough to tell the truth.”

His gun lowered.

Then a shot came from the doorway.

Rafael fell.

One of Dane’s former security men stood behind him.

Andrew threw me to the floor.

Police returned fire.

The attacker dropped.

My father bled across the marble.

I pressed my hands to his wound.

“Stay with me.”

He looked at my face.

“I wanted you to be safe.”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

He died before the ambulance arrived.

I wept for the father I loved.

And for the man he had chosen to become.

The ledger exposed dozens of crimes.

Children were reunited with families.

Officials resigned.

Investigations spread across three states.

Brenda recovered.

She entered a protection program with Clara.

The empire was finally gone.

May you like

But one question remained.

What would I build in its place?
