CHAPTER 2 DECLINED

At 7:12 the next morning, Andrew’s credit card was declined.

He stared at the waiter as though the man had insulted his bloodline.

“Run it again.”

The waiter tried.

Declined.

Margaret slid her black card across the breakfast table.

Declined.

Brenda forced a laugh.

“Maybe the system is down.”

Andrew grabbed his phone.

He opened the banking app.

Every account showed the same message.

ACCESS RESTRICTED — AUTHORIZATION REVOKED.

His face changed.

He called the private banker.

“Mr. Whitmore,” the banker said carefully, “your access was suspended by the controlling beneficiary.”

“I am the controlling beneficiary.”

“No, sir.”

Andrew went silent.

The banker continued.

“The Escalante Strategic Trust holds controlling authority over Whitmore Holdings.”

Brenda’s smile vanished.

Margaret gripped the table.

“That’s impossible.”

Andrew hung up.

He called his chief financial officer.

No answer.

He called his lawyer.

No answer.

He called his assistant.

Finally, someone picked up.

“Sir, security has been instructed not to admit you to headquarters.”

Andrew stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“By whom?”

There was a long pause.

“By Ms. Escalante.”

He stared at the phone.

“My wife?”

The assistant lowered his voice.

“She is chairing an emergency board meeting at nine.”

Andrew drove to headquarters at ninety miles per hour.

Brenda and Margaret followed in another car.

When he reached the glass tower, his name had disappeared from the electronic directory.

Security blocked the turnstile.

“Move,” Andrew ordered.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Whitmore.”

“This is my building.”

A familiar voice came from behind him.

“No, Andrew.”

I stepped out of the private elevator.

I wore a charcoal suit.

My hair was pulled back.

My cheek still carried the faint red mark from his hand.

The lobby fell silent.

Behind me stood twelve board members.

My father stood among them.

Rafael Escalante.

Andrew stared at him.

My father had stayed away from public events for years.

He had allowed me to build my marriage without the shadow of his fortune.

Andrew had met him only once.

As an old family friend.

My father looked at Andrew’s raised hand.

Then he looked at my bruised face.

His expression hardened.

Andrew swallowed.

“Mariana, stop this performance.”

I held out a folder.

“You have been removed as CEO pending investigation.”

His face drained of color.

“Investigation into what?”

“Fraud.”

“Hidden debt.”

“Misuse of corporate funds.”

Brenda took a step backward.

Andrew noticed.

“What did you do?” he snapped at her.

She shook her head quickly.

“Nothing.”

I opened the folder.

“Eight million dollars was transferred into an account connected to Brenda Cole.”

The entire lobby turned toward her.

Andrew’s mouth fell open.

Brenda whispered, “I can explain.”

I smiled without warmth.

“You’ll have plenty of time.”

Two investigators entered through the main doors.

May you like

Before they could reach her—

Brenda ran.
