CHAPTER 9 — THE HOUSE OF LIES

Arthur Sterling had spent his entire adult life believing his mansion was the one place in the world where his family was safe.
It had been built by his grandfather.
Expanded by his father.
Filled with memories of birthdays, holidays, and quiet evenings with Emily.
Every wall carried a piece of his life.
Now every wall felt like it had been watching him.
The bloody wedding dress lay on the marble floor.
Emily stood frozen.
Her face had lost all color.
“That’s mine.”
Arthur looked at her.
“What?”
“That dress.”
Her voice barely existed.
“The one I wore when we married.”
Arthur stepped closer.
The ivory fabric was stained with dark red marks.
Not fresh.
Paint.
A message.
A threat.
Daniel crouched beside it.
“He wants us to think someone was hurt.”
Emily touched the fabric.
“He knows exactly what will break us.”
Arthur looked around the foyer.
“Where is Lily?”
No answer.
He shouted.
“LILY!”
His voice echoed through the mansion.
Nothing.
Then a small sound came from upstairs.
A soft knock.
Everyone looked up.
Arthur moved first.
“Lily?”
He ran toward the staircase.
“Wait!” Daniel shouted.
But Arthur was already moving.
The second floor hallway was dark.
The lights flickered.
His daughter’s bedroom door stood open.
Inside...
A small figure sat on the floor.
Arthur stopped.
“Lily.”
She looked up.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Daddy.”
He crossed the room and lifted her into his arms.
For several seconds, he could not speak.
He just held her.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily buried her face against him.
“I was scared.”
“I know.”
“Grandpa Charles said you didn’t love me anymore.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“He lied.”
“He said Mommy lied too.”
Arthur looked toward the doorway.
Emily stood there.
Hearing those words nearly destroyed her.
She stepped inside slowly.
“Lily?”
The child froze.
Arthur watched the impossible moment.
Mother and daughter.
Separated for two years.
Standing in the same room.
Lily stared at Emily.
Then looked at Arthur.
“Is she real?”
Arthur’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
Emily knelt.
But she did not move closer.
She waited.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily said nothing.
“I missed you every day.”
“You were gone.”
Emily nodded.
“I know.”
“You didn’t come home.”
A tear rolled down Emily’s face.
“I tried.”
Lily looked confused.
“Why?”
Emily looked at Arthur.
Then back at her daughter.
“Because bad people stopped me.”
Slowly...
Lily moved forward.
Just one step.
Then another.
Emily held out her arms.
Lily ran into them.
The sound Emily made was not a cry.
It was something deeper.
The sound of a person finally getting back the part of themselves they thought was gone forever.
Arthur watched silently.
For the first time in two years...
His family was together.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?”
Arthur looked at him.
“What happened?”
Daniel covered the phone.
“The police found Charles’s vehicle.”
“Where?”
“Near the old Sterling Foundation building.”
James, who had arrived moments earlier, frowned.
“That building was sold five years ago.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why he chose it.”
Arthur looked toward Emily.
“Why?”
Emily wiped Lily’s tears.
“Because that’s where I met Victoria.”
The room went quiet.
The old Sterling Foundation building had been abandoned for years.
The charity moved downtown after Arthur became CEO.
But the original headquarters remained.
A place full of records.
Memories.
Secrets.
When Arthur arrived with Daniel, Emily, James, and Detective Cole, the building looked exactly as it had when he left.
Dusty windows.
Broken signs.
A forgotten piece of the Sterling empire.
Cole’s team searched the first floor.
Nothing.
Too easy.
Arthur knew it.
“He wants us to find something.”
Daniel nodded.
“Charles never leaves without a reason.”
They reached the old executive offices.
Emily stopped.
“This was my office.”
Arthur looked at her.
“You worked here?”
“Before Lily was born.”
She walked inside slowly.
Her fingers touched the old desk.
A memory.
A smile.
Then pain.
“He came here.”
“Who?”
“Charles.”
“When?”
“The day before I disappeared.”
Everyone turned.
Emily closed her eyes.
“He told me he knew about Daniel.”
Daniel looked down.
“He threatened you.”
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
Emily looked toward the window.
“He wanted access to the Ashcroft accounts.”
“And you refused.”
“Yes.”
“What happened after?”
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“He told me I would regret choosing my husband over my family.”
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“He always saw you as an asset.”
Emily nodded.
“Not a person.”
A noise came from the hallway.
Everyone reached for weapons.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Not Charles.
Not Victoria.
Martin Hale.
Arthur immediately raised his gun.
“You have five seconds.”
Hale lifted both hands.
“I’m not here to fight.”
“You helped them.”
“I know.”
“You helped steal my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Why should I listen?”
Hale looked exhausted.
“Because I know where Charles is going.”
Daniel studied him.
“You escaped.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Charles thought I was dead.”
Arthur narrowed his eyes.
“Why?”
Hale looked at Emily.
“Because I found the real report.”
The room became silent.
“The report about Emily’s death?”
Hale nodded.
“I saw what Charles did.”
Emily stepped closer.
“What did he do?”
Hale looked ashamed.
“He changed the results.”
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
“What did the original report say?”
Hale reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“The truth.”
Arthur took it.
Inside were laboratory results.
He read the first line.
Cause of collapse: unknown toxin exposure.
The second line.
Evidence of intentional poisoning.
The third line.
Patient condition inconsistent with fatal exposure.
Arthur looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Hale swallowed.
“Emily was not dead.”
Arthur already knew.
But hearing it again still hurt.
“She was alive.”
“Yes.”
“Then who was the body?”
Hale hesitated.
“A woman from one of Vale’s medical programs.”
Arthur felt sick.
“A replacement.”
“Yes.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“They erased me.”
Hale nodded.
“Charles did not want you dead.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He wanted you removed.”
“Why?”
“Because Emily was the only person who could expose him.”
Arthur looked at the report.
“And Victoria?”
Hale looked toward Emily.
“She knew.”
Emily’s face changed.
“What?”
“Victoria helped Charles create the entire plan.”
“No.”
“She knew you were alive.”
Emily stepped back.
“No.”
Hale continued.
“She visited Vale House.”
Arthur looked at Emily.
“She saw you?”
Emily nodded slowly.
A memory surfaced.
“She came once.”
Arthur froze.
“What?”
Emily touched her head.
“She stood outside my room.”
“When?”
“Months after they took me.”
“What did she say?”
Emily’s breathing became uneven.
“She said…”
A tear fell.
“She said Arthur belonged to her now.”
Silence.
Then Arthur’s phone vibrated.
A message.
From Victoria.
Everyone looked.
The message contained one photo.
Victoria sitting in a hospital room.
Alive.
Smiling.
Beside her...
A folder.
The Ashcroft journal.
The caption:
You found the house.
But you still haven't found the truth.
A second message arrived.
Come alone, Arthur.
Or I open the journal before you do.
Arthur stared at the screen.
Emily grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“She has the journal.”
“She wants you alone.”
“I know.”
“She wants control.”
Arthur looked at Lily.
Then back at Emily.
“You know what happens if that journal disappears.”
Emily’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
“What?”
She whispered:
“It contains the original inheritance documents.”
Daniel understood.
“If Victoria destroys them, Charles controls everything.”
Arthur nodded.
Emily held his hand.
“Don’t go.”
Arthur looked at her.
“I have to.”
“No.”
“This is how they always win.”
She looked confused.
“What?”
“They separate us.”
Arthur looked at Daniel.
“Charles separated you from me.”
He looked at Lily.
“He separated Lily from us.”
Then at Emily.
“I’m done letting him decide where my family stands.”
Victoria waited inside the abandoned hospital wing.
She had removed the hospital gown.
She wore a black dress.
Elegant.
Calm.
Like the woman Arthur first met.
When Arthur entered alone, she smiled.
“I knew you would come.”
Arthur stopped several feet away.
“Where is Lily’s journal?”
Victoria laughed softly.
“Straight to business.”
“You lost.”
“No.”
She touched the folder beside her.
“I still have the one thing everyone wants.”
“You almost killed a child.”
“I saved myself.”
“You destroyed my family.”
Victoria’s expression changed.
“You think Emily was innocent?”
Arthur said nothing.
Victoria stepped closer.
“She never told you the truth.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
Arthur watched her carefully.
“You lied about everything.”
“Did I?”
She opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
Not the journal.
A birth certificate.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“What is that?”
Victoria smiled.
“The truth about Lily.”
Arthur stared.
“No.”
“You know the funny thing?”
She held up the paper.
“Charles wanted money.”
“He wanted power.”
“But I wanted something else.”
Arthur’s voice became cold.
“What?”
Victoria looked directly at him.
“I wanted you to know that the daughter you love…”
She paused.
“…was never supposed to be yours.”
Arthur’s face changed.
Victoria smiled.
“Now let’s talk about the final secret.”
The lights suddenly went out.
Arthur heard movement behind him.
A door slammed.
When the emergency lights returned...
Victoria was gone.
The folder was gone.
And on the floor...
Was a single page from the journal.
A handwritten sentence.
May you like
Arthur Sterling is not Lily’s biological father.
