CHAPTER 8 — THE LAST SECRET EMILY HID

No one spoke.

The underground chamber was silent except for the sound of Arthur’s breathing.

He looked at Emily.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

With confusion.

Pain.

Fear.

“Emily.”

She closed her eyes.

“I can explain.”

Those four words hurt more than any confession.

Because they meant there was something to explain.

Arthur stepped back.

“Who is Lily’s father?”

Emily looked toward Daniel.

Then away.

Daniel understood before anyone else.

“Emily.”

She whispered:

“Arthur…”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“Tell me.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Lily is your daughter.”

Arthur stared.

“Then why did Charles say that?”

“Because he knows how to twist the truth.”

“Emily.”

She looked down.

“When I was pregnant with Lily, I discovered something about my own family.”

“What?”

“My father.”

Daniel looked away.

Emily continued.

“My biological father was not the man I grew up believing he was.”

Arthur looked at Daniel.

Understanding began forming.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Emily whispered:

“My father was Daniel.”

The chamber went completely silent.

Arthur looked at the older man.

Daniel did not deny it.

“I found out when I was twenty.”

Emily’s voice shook.

“My mother hid it because Daniel was young and reckless. He left before he knew I existed.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I searched for her.”

“But you never found her.”

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“You came back too late.”

Daniel looked broken.

“Yes.”

Arthur processed everything.

“Then Lily…”

Emily nodded.

“Has Ashcroft blood.”

James looked at the family documents.

“That’s what Charles wanted.”

Arthur looked confused.

“Why?”

Daniel answered.

“Because the Ashcroft family had a controlling interest in several old trusts connected to Sterling Global.”

Arthur stared.

“Lily inherited from both sides.”

“Yes.”

Charles did not just want Sterling shares.

He wanted access to another fortune.

Emily stepped closer.

“I should have told you.”

Arthur looked at her.

“When?”

“Before we married.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Of losing you.”

Arthur looked away.

For years, he had believed the worst betrayal came from Victoria.

Now he discovered the woman he loved had hidden a life-changing secret.

But he also saw the pain in her eyes.

The same pain he had carried.

A life destroyed by lies.

Before he could answer, the screen turned on again.

Charles appeared.

Lily sat beside him.

Arthur immediately moved toward the screen.

“Let her go.”

Charles smiled.

“Still protecting her.”

Arthur’s voice became cold.

“She is a child.”

“So was Emily when her family secrets began.”

Emily stepped forward.

“Charles.”

He smiled.

“You remember me now.”

“I remember enough.”

“Good.”

Charles leaned back.

“Then you remember the contract.”

Emily froze.

Arthur noticed.

“What contract?”

Charles laughed.

“She never told you.”

Emily looked terrified.

“Stop.”

“What contract?”

Charles looked directly at Arthur.

“The agreement Emily signed before Lily was born.”

Arthur turned.

“Emily?”

She whispered:

“It was not what he says.”

“Then explain.”

Emily looked at him.

“When I was pregnant, Charles discovered Daniel’s identity.”

Arthur listened.

“He threatened to expose everything.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew my mother’s family had hidden assets.”

“And?”

“He forced me to sign a document giving him temporary control of those assets if anything happened to me.”

Arthur looked at Charles.

“You forced a pregnant woman into a contract.”

Charles smiled.

“I protected my interests.”

“You threatened her.”

“She agreed.”

Arthur’s hands curled.

“You are a monster.”

Charles ignored him.

“The funny thing is, Emily thought she was clever.”

Emily stared at the screen.

“What?”

“You hid the real documents.”

A pause.

Arthur looked at her.

“What documents?”

Charles smiled.

“The ones proving Lily owns everything.”

Emily’s face changed.

He was right.

There was something else.

Arthur saw it.

“Emily.”

She whispered:

“I hid them.”

“Where?”

She looked toward the chamber.

Then at the old family records.

“The Ashcroft journal.”

Daniel moved.

“The one from the archive?”

Emily nodded.

Charles smiled.

“Exactly.”

Arthur understood.

The hidden chamber.

The secrets.

The documents.

Everything had been designed to force them to reveal the location.

Charles had not been searching for Lily’s inheritance.

He had been searching for proof.

“Where is the journal?”

Emily looked around.

“It was here.”

Daniel searched the shelves.

Nothing.

Charles laughed.

“You are too late.”

Arthur looked at the screen.

“Where is my daughter?”

Charles leaned toward Lily.

“Tell your father what you found.”

Lily looked terrified.

Arthur spoke gently.

“Sweetheart.”

She looked at the screen.

“Grandpa Charles made me open Mommy’s old box.”

Arthur froze.

“What box?”

“The one under the floor.”

Emily’s face changed.

“The studio.”

Charles smiled.

“Your daughter is smarter than all of you.”

Arthur realized.

While they searched the cemetery...

Charles had sent Lily back to the place where the story began.

Emily’s studio.

The place where she hid everything.

Charles continued.

“Bring me the journal, Arthur.”

“And if I don’t?”

Charles looked at Lily.

Arthur’s voice dropped.

“If you touch her—”

Charles smiled.

“You still think this is about violence.”

The screen flickered.

“You misunderstand me.”

“Then what is it about?”

Charles looked toward Lily.

“Choice.”

The screen went black.

The chamber door unlocked.

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“We go back.”

Arthur nodded.

Emily grabbed his arm.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“I lost two years.”

She looked at him.

“I’m not losing my daughter again.”

Arthur looked at her.

Then nodded.

They returned to the mansion with one mission.

Find Lily.

Find the journal.

End Charles Sterling.

But when they arrived...

The mansion gates were open.

The security cameras were destroyed.

The front door stood unlocked.

Inside the foyer...

A single object waited.

Emily’s white wedding dress.

Covered in blood.

And attached to it...

Was a note.

You wanted the truth.

Now see what it costs.
