CHAPTER 13 â THE FAMILY THAT BURIED ITS SECRETS

The old Sterling mansion looked exactly the way Arthur remembered.
And that was the cruelest part.
The same black iron gates.
The same long driveway surrounded by ancient trees.
The same stone walls that had watched generations of Sterlings celebrate victories and hide disasters.
Arthur had spent his childhood believing this house represented power.
Security.
Legacy.
Now he understood something different.
A beautiful house could still hide ugly things.
Emily sat beside him in the car, staring at the mansion.
For several minutes, neither of them spoke.
Finally, she whispered:
"I never thought I would come back here."
Arthur looked at her.
"You were here before?"
Emily nodded slowly.
"Once."
"When?"
"The night before they took me."
Arthur turned.
"What?"
Emily looked toward the dark windows.
"I don't remember everything clearly."
Her hand moved to her temple.
"The medication damaged my memory. Some moments are missing. Some are mixed with nightmares."
Arthur reached for her hand.
"You don't have to force yourself."
"But I do."
She looked at him.
"Because Lily deserves the truth."
Arthur squeezed her hand.
That was the difference between the woman who disappeared and the woman sitting beside him now.
Emily was still afraid.
Still healing.
But she was no longer running.
Daniel opened the car door.
"We should move."
Arthur nodded.
The team entered the mansion.
Detective Cole's officers surrounded the property.
No one knew what Victoria had prepared.
But Arthur knew one thing.
She wanted him there.
Which meant she had a reason.
Inside, the mansion was almost completely empty.
Furniture covered with white sheets.
Dust covering the floors.
A place frozen in time.
Emily walked toward the ballroom.
Arthur followed.
"This is where we met."
He looked at her.
"You remember?"
She smiled faintly.
"Of course."
"You were wearing a blue dress."
Arthur smiled.
"You spilled champagne on my jacket."
"I apologized for twenty minutes."
"You offered to pay for a two-thousand-dollar jacket."
"Because I thought you were angry."
"I wasn't."
Emily looked at him.
"You were laughing."
"Because you looked terrified."
For a brief moment...
They were not survivors.
They were just Arthur and Emily.
Two people who once fell in love.
Then a voice interrupted.
"Beautiful."
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood at the top of the staircase.
No guards.
No weapon.
Just a black dress and a calm expression.
Arthur immediately stepped forward.
"Where is Lily?"
Victoria looked at him.
"Still the same."
"What?"
"You always cared about the child first."
Arthur's eyes hardened.
"Because she is my daughter."
Victoria smiled.
"Is she?"
Emily moved forward.
"Stop."
Victoria looked at her.
"You finally remember."
"I remember enough."
"Do you?"
The words struck Emily.
Arthur noticed.
Victoria walked down slowly.
"You think I was the villain from the beginning."
"Weren't you?"
Victoria looked at the floor.
"I wanted to be."
Everyone stared.
She continued.
"Do you know what happens when you spend your entire life being told you don't belong?"
Arthur said nothing.
"My mother was born into the Sterling family."
James stepped forward.
"The illegitimate daughter."
Victoria looked at him.
"You know."
"I researched the family."
Victoria laughed quietly.
"Of course you did."
Arthur watched her carefully.
"So this was revenge."
Victoria looked at him.
"At first."
"And later?"
Her expression changed.
"Later it became survival."
Emily shook her head.
"You kidnapped my daughter."
Victoria looked at her.
"I never wanted Lily hurt."
Arthur's voice became cold.
"But you pushed her into the pool."
Victoria looked away.
For the first time...
She had no excuse.
"I lost control."
Arthur stared.
"That's not an accident."
"No."
The honesty surprised everyone.
Victoria continued.
"I hated her."
Emily stepped back.
"Why?"
"Because she had everything I never had."
"A loving father?"
"A family."
Victoria's voice cracked.
"You had everything."
Arthur answered quietly.
"And you destroyed it."
Victoria looked at him.
"Charles promised me justice."
"And you believed him."
"I was young."
"No."
Arthur shook his head.
"You were angry."
Silence.
Victoria looked toward the old fireplace.
"Charles found me after my father died."
"Robert Vale."
She nodded.
"He told me the Sterlings ruined my family."
Emily interrupted.
"Your father helped destroy innocent people."
Victoria's eyes hardened.
"Everyone in this family destroyed someone."
Arthur froze.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria looked directly at him.
"Your father knew."
"About what?"
"About Robert Vale."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Explain."
Victoria smiled.
"The medical fraud. The hidden accounts. The experiments."
Arthur stared.
"What experiments?"
Victoria reached into her bag.
She removed a folder.
"I didn't bring this to save myself."
She looked at Arthur.
"I brought it because Charles was always the real monster."
Daniel took the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Old documents.
Medical files.
The same names.
But one file stopped Arthur.
Sterling Family Cognitive Research Project.
His face changed.
"What is this?"
Victoria answered:
"Your grandfather funded it."
Emily looked horrified.
"What kind of research?"
Victoria looked at her.
"The kind that studies memory."
Arthur felt cold.
The medication.
The false memories.
Emily's imprisonment.
It all connected.
Charles had not invented the method.
He inherited it.
Daniel flipped through the pages.
"These are from thirty years ago."
Victoria nodded.
"Your family created the foundation."
Arthur looked at her.
"Why tell me now?"
"Because Charles betrayed me."
A sound came from behind them.
Slow applause.
Everyone turned.
Charles Sterling entered from the side hallway.
Older.
Calmer.
More dangerous.
"You always were emotional, Victoria."
Victoria's face changed.
"You used me."
Charles smiled.
"I used everyone."
Arthur raised his weapon.
Charles did not stop.
"You really think this ends with me being arrested?"
Detective Cole stepped forward.
"It does."
Charles laughed.
"No."
He looked around the ballroom.
"This house has survived wars."
"Deaths."
"Betrayals."
"It will survive this."
Arthur stared.
"Why?"
Charles looked at him.
"Because you still don't understand your father."
Arthur said nothing.
Charles continued.
"Your father wasn't trying to save the company."
"He was trying to erase the evidence."
James frowned.
"What evidence?"
Charles smiled.
"The Black Ledger."
Arthur stepped forward.
"We know about it."
"Do you?"
Charles laughed.
"You found the copy."
A pause.
"But not the original."
Everyone went silent.
"Where is it?"
Charles looked toward Emily.
"She knows."
Emily froze.
"No."
Charles smiled.
"Yes."
Arthur turned.
"Emily?"
She shook her head.
"I don't remember."
Charles walked closer.
"That is the point."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Charles..."
Charles smiled.
"Your wife hid the original ledger before she disappeared."
Emily closed her eyes.
A memory flashed.
A room.
A safe.
Her own voice.
"If anything happens, hide it where Arthur will never search."
Arthur saw her expression.
"You remember something."
Emily whispered:
"The old nursery."
Everyone looked at her.
Arthur's childhood nursery.
A room sealed after his younger brother's death.
Charles smiled.
"Exactly."
Then he pressed a button.
The ballroom doors locked.
The windows sealed.
Gas began entering through the vents.
Cole shouted:
"Everyone out!"
Chaos erupted.
Arthur grabbed Emily.
Daniel pulled James toward the exit.
Charles stepped backward.
Smiling.
"Find the ledger."
"Or lose the last thing your family has left."
Arthur looked toward him.
"What?"
Charles looked upstairs.
"The child."
Arthur's blood ran cold.
"Lily."
A speaker turned on.
Victoria's voice played.
"No..."
Everyone froze.
Because Victoria sounded terrified.
Not acting.
Terrified.
A second voice followed.
Lily.
"Daddy?"
Arthur's entire world stopped.
Charles smiled.
May you like
"Welcome home."
The mansion lights went out.
