Chapter 3: The Family That Chose Money Over Blood

My father stood up.
“You’re emotional. You’re grieving.”
He pointed at the folder.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I looked at him.
For years, I had been afraid of disappointing him.
Afraid of losing my family.
But standing there in my empty house…
Between my daughter’s drawings and my husband’s coffee mug…
I realized something.
I had already lost them.
Years ago.
I just didn’t know it.
“You skipped my daughter’s funeral,” I said quietly.
My mother looked away.
“You were hurting, Clara. We couldn’t handle that.”
I laughed.
A broken, painful laugh.
“You couldn’t handle my pain?”
I walked toward the table.
“But you could handle spending thousands on a beach vacation?”
Silence.
Mason finally spoke.
“You’re being dramatic.”
That word.
Dramatic.
The same word they used whenever I cried.
Whenever I needed help.
Whenever I told them something was wrong.
I picked up my phone.
“You should hear something.”
I pressed play.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re hearing this, it means I was right.”
My family froze.
Daniel continued.
“Clara, I’m sorry you had to find out this way. Your parents have been manipulating you for years. They believe you will always forgive them.”
My mother’s face turned pale.
“You recorded us?”
I looked at her.
“No.”
I smiled sadly.
“Daniel did.”
The recording continued.
“I found proof that Mason helped them hide the money. I transferred everything important into Clara’s name. She deserves the truth.”
My father stepped forward.
“Turn that off.”
I didn’t move.
“You came here asking for $40,000.”

I looked at all three of them.
“But you’re leaving with something much worse.”
