Chapter 2: The Secret Daniel Left Behind

Two weeks before the accident, Daniel had been acting differently.

He became quiet.

Careful.

Like he was carrying something heavy.

I thought it was stress from work.

I thought he was worried about bills.

I never imagined he was worried about my family.

The night before he died, Daniel sat beside me on the couch while Lily slept upstairs.

“Clara,” he said softly.

I looked at him.

“What’s wrong?”

He hesitated.

Then he reached for my hand.

“Promise me something.”

“What?”

“If something happens to me… don’t trust anyone who suddenly says they love you.”

I laughed nervously.

“Daniel, what are you talking about?”

He looked toward the hallway.

Toward Lily’s room.

“Your parents have been hiding something from you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he handed me a small key.

“Don’t open the box until you’re ready.”

The next morning…

He and Lily never came home.

A drunk driver.

A wet road.

A moment that destroyed my entire world.

After the funeral, I found the box hidden inside our closet.

Inside were bank records.

Emails.

Legal documents.

And one shocking discovery.

My parents had been taking money from Daniel’s company for years.

Not stealing directly.

They were smarter than that.

They created fake consulting contracts.

They convinced Daniel they were helping me financially.

But they weren’t helping me.

They were using my marriage as their personal bank account.

And the worst part?

Mason knew.

He had signed some of the documents himself.

I looked up from the folder.

My family sat silently across from me.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

My mother finally spoke.

“You don’t understand the situation.”

I closed the folder.

“No.”

May you like

My voice became stronger.

“I understand everything now.”
