Chapter 1: The Folder That Changed Everything

I didn’t invite my parents into my house that night.

But somehow, they still walked in like they owned it.

My mother, Evelyn, placed her expensive handbag on my kitchen table—the same table where Lily used to draw pictures of our family every Sunday morning.

She didn’t notice the small purple crayon mark still left on the wood.

Or maybe she did.

Maybe she simply didn’t care.

“Clara,” she sighed, looking around the room. “You really need to pull yourself together.”

I stared at her.

My husband and my daughter had been buried three days ago.

Three days.

And the woman who gave birth to me was standing in my kitchen complaining about my appearance.

My father opened a cabinet.

I felt my stomach twist.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

He didn’t even turn around.

“Looking for important documents.”

“Important documents?”

He finally looked at me.

“Insurance papers. Bank information. Anything related to Daniel’s assets.”

I felt something inside me go completely numb.

The man didn’t ask about Daniel.

He didn’t ask about Lily.

He asked about money.

Then Mason stepped forward.

My little brother.

The golden child.

The son who always got everything.

The son my parents protected while I spent my entire life trying to earn their love.

“Clara,” he said impatiently, “we’re not here to fight.”

I almost smiled.

Because that was exactly what people said before they hurt you.

“We just need the $40,000.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He rolled his eyes.

“Don’t make this difficult.”

My mother crossed her arms.

“Your brother has debts. Family helps family.”

Family.

That word almost made me laugh.

Because my family had abandoned me when I needed them most.

I reached for the black folder sitting beside me.

The folder they didn’t know I had.

The folder containing documents Daniel discovered two weeks before the accident.

The folder that explained why my husband had been secretly investigating my own family.

I placed it on the table.

Everyone froze.

“What is that?” my father asked.

I opened it slowly.

“It’s the truth.”

My mother’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

And that was when I knew.

They already knew what was inside.
