Chapter 3: The Family He Chose
Six months later, the nursery looked completely different.
The broken memories were gone.
The fear was gone.

Daniel sat beside the crib, watching his son sleep.
Emily walked in and smiled.
“You’re still checking on him every ten minutes.”
Daniel smiled.
“I missed too much already.”
She sat beside him.
For a moment, they enjoyed the quiet.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His mother.
He hesitated.
Emily noticed.
“You don’t have to answer.”
Daniel looked at the crib.
Then at his wife.
Then he answered.
“Hello, Mom.”
Margaret’s voice was softer than before.
“I wanted to tell you something.”
Daniel stayed silent.
“I started therapy.”
He didn’t expect that.
“I finally admitted what I did.”
A long pause followed.
“I hurt the people you loved because I was afraid of losing you.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
For years, he had wanted his mother to understand.
But understanding did not erase what happened.
“I’m glad you’re getting help,” he said.
Margaret took a shaky breath.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Daniel looked at Emily.
She gave him a small nod.
Not because she forgot.
But because she had healed.
“I don’t know,” Daniel answered honestly.
“But maybe someday.”
Margaret cried softly.
“That’s more than I deserve.”
After the call ended, Daniel placed his phone down.
Emily leaned against his shoulder.
“Do you think she’ll change?”
Daniel looked at his son sleeping peacefully.
“I hope she does.”
Then he looked at Emily.
“But even if she doesn’t…”
He held her hand.
“We’re okay.”
Years later, Daniel would still remember that night.
The night he opened a nursery door expecting peace…
