Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Smile

The nursery fell into a terrifying silence.
The only sound was the soft cry of the newborn baby.
Daniel stood frozen in the middle of the room, his eyes locked on the woman who had raised him.
His mother.
Margaret.
The woman who had always told him that family was everything.
The woman who had taught him to protect those he loved.
And yet…
She was the one destroying his family.
“Mom…” Daniel’s voice came out broken.
Margaret slowly turned around.
For a second, she looked surprised.
Then her expression hardened.
“Oh, you’re finally home.”
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Daniel looked at his wife, Emily, lying on the carpet with tears streaming down her face. Her hands trembled as she held their newborn son close to her chest.
“Daniel…” Emily whispered.
She didn’t ask him to help.
She didn’t need to.
The fear in her eyes said everything.
“What happened?” Daniel demanded.
Margaret rolled her eyes.
“Don’t look at me like that. Your wife has been manipulating you since the day she entered this house.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What are you talking about?”
“She stole you from me.”
The words hit him harder than any physical blow.
Margaret stepped closer.
“You used to be my son. You used to need me. Then she came along and suddenly I became a stranger.”
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
“You hurt her because you were jealous?”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“She doesn’t belong here.”
Behind him, Emily began crying harder.
Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.
“I should have listened.”
Emily looked at him through her tears.
“For months, I tried to tell you.”
The memory rushed back.
The small things he ignored.
Emily becoming quieter.
Emily avoiding being alone with his mother.
The excuses.
The fear.
He had convinced himself they were misunderstandings.
But they weren’t.
They were warnings.
Daniel looked back at Margaret.
“You touched my wife.”
Margaret lifted her chin.
“I’m your mother.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And she is my wife.”
The room went silent.
For the first time in his life, Margaret looked afraid.
Because she realized something.
Her son was no longer choosing her.
Daniel carefully helped Emily stand.
Then he picked up his baby.
“I want you out of this house tonight.”
Margaret stared at him.
“You would throw your own mother away?”
Daniel looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“No.”
May you like
His voice broke.
“You did that when you hurt my family.”
