Chapter 1 — The Evidence on the Table

Richard Hale had walked into the penthouse expecting another emotional argument.

He expected tears.

He expected accusations.

He expected the same Evelyn he had controlled for fifteen years.

The quiet wife who forgave.

The woman who stood beside him during endless business dinners.

The woman who smiled beside him while rumors about his affairs spread through elite circles.

But the woman sitting across from him was different.

She was calm.

Too calm.

Richard removed his coat and placed it over the back of a chair.

“Evelyn,” he said with a tired sigh. “I don't have time for another dramatic conversation.”

For the first time that evening, Evelyn looked directly at him.

A small smile appeared.

Not a loving smile.

A dangerous one.

“You still think this is about feelings?”

Richard frowned.

“What else would it be about?”

Evelyn slowly pushed the leather folder across the glass table.

Richard looked down.

He opened it casually.

Then his expression changed.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Private messages.

Secret business agreements.

Documents proving he had transferred millions of dollars into hidden accounts.

His confidence disappeared for only a second.

But Evelyn noticed.

She noticed everything.

“For six months,” she said quietly, “you thought you were hiding your life from me.”

Richard closed the folder.

“You hired someone to investigate me?”

“No.”

Evelyn stood slowly.

“I learned how to listen.”

The room became silent.

The city lights reflected against the windows.

Richard forced a laugh.

“You think this changes anything?”

Evelyn walked toward the window.

“No.”

May you like

She looked down at Chicago.

“It changes everything.”
