Chapter 4: Justice Arrives Quietly

Snow continued to fall as agents approached David one final time.

"David Hale."

He looked up slowly.

"You are being detained pending questioning regarding conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice."

He laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

"My father will fix this."

The lead investigator calmly handed him another document.

"Your father was arrested twenty minutes ago."

For the first time in years...

David looked afraid.

He searched the crowd for someone to save him.

No one moved.

Vanessa walked out of the mansion surrounded by agents, her mascara streaked from tears. She looked at David with disbelief.

"You told me everything was legal."

He couldn't answer.

Because it wasn't.

As officers placed him into the vehicle, he finally looked back at me.

"I loved you."

I held Noah a little closer.

"No."

"You loved having someone to sacrifice."

The door shut.

The convoy drove away through the falling snow.

Six months later, every stolen asset had been recovered through the courts.

Victims were compensated.

Richard Hale received a lengthy federal prison sentence.

David accepted a plea deal that spared years of litigation but not his freedom.

The mansion was sold, and its proceeds became part of the restitution fund.

As for me...

I never wanted revenge.

I wanted the truth.

On Noah's first birthday, I watched him take his first unsteady steps across the floor of our small, sunlit home.

For the first time in a very long time...

The future belonged to us.
