Chapter 2: The Mansion Was Never Theirs

David's face slowly lost its color.

"What did you just say?"

I didn't answer.

Across the street, three black SUVs rolled through the iron gates of the mansion.

Vanessa was standing in the grand foyer, proudly showing Margaret Hale where she planned to display the family diamonds.

She never heard the front door open behind her.

"Federal Financial Crimes Division," a calm voice announced.

"No one leaves this property."

Margaret laughed.

"There must be some mistake."

She reached for her phone.

An agent gently took it from her hand.

"There is no mistake, Mrs. Hale."

He unfolded a thick warrant.

"We have authorization to seize this property and every financial record connected to Richard Hale."

Richard stepped forward, his face red with outrage.

"That house belongs to my daughter-in-law."

The lead agent looked down at the paperwork.

"It belongs to Hale Family Recovery Trust."

Richard frowned.

"I've never heard of that trust."

"I know," the agent replied.

"Because it wasn't created by you."

Vanessa stared at the signature page.

At the bottom was one name.

Elena Carter.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Outside the courthouse, David's phone began vibrating without stopping.

His mother.

His father.

His lawyer.

Twenty-three missed calls appeared within seconds.

Finally, he answered.

"What?"

Margaret's scream exploded through the speaker.

"David!"

"The house isn't ours!"

"They've frozen everything!"

Richard grabbed the phone.

"They found the offshore accounts!"

David slowly lowered the phone.

His confident smile disappeared.

I looked at him quietly.

"I told you to ask whose name was on the deed."
