Chapter 6: Born Too Soon

The operating room doors closed between Daniel and his wife.

He stood in the hallway, helpless.

Inside, doctors worked to stabilize Sarah.

The baby’s heart rate recovered briefly, then dropped again.

Dr. Morris made the decision.

“We’re delivering.”

At 2:17 in the afternoon, Sarah gave birth to a daughter weighing three pounds, eleven ounces.

The baby did not cry immediately.

Sarah searched the room through a blur of lights and masked faces.

“Why isn’t she crying?”

A neonatal specialist carried the baby to a warming station.

“Come on, little one.”

Sarah began to shake.

“Please.”

Then a thin, fragile cry rose above the machines.

Sarah sobbed.

The baby was rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Sarah was taken to recovery.

Daniel met his daughter through the clear wall of an incubator.

She was impossibly small.

A nurse placed a tiny identification band around her wrist.

“Have you chosen a name?”

Daniel touched the glass.

“Miriam.”

When Sarah woke, Daniel told her.

She cried again.

“My mother would have loved her.”

“She protected her before she was even born,” Daniel said. “That recording exists because you were trying to uncover the truth.”

Sarah looked toward the empty bassinet beside her bed.

“Is Miriam going to survive?”

“The doctors are hopeful.”

“Hopeful isn’t certain.”

“No. But she’s fighting.”

Across town, Detective Bennett received an anonymous email.

The subject line read:

THE TRUTH ABOUT MIRIAM WHITMORE.

Attached was a video recorded on a dashboard camera twelve years earlier.

The footage showed Miriam standing in the garage arguing with Richard.

Jason was visible near the car.

Miriam shouted, “You cut the belt!”

Jason answered, “Dad said you were leaving us with nothing!”

Richard grabbed Miriam by the arm.

“You’re not taking the company.”

Miriam pulled free and ran toward the driveway.

The video ended before the crash.

But the sender had included a message.

I have the rest. Protect Rosa Alvarez, and I will send it.

Bennett immediately contacted Rosa.

No answer.

Officers drove to her apartment.

The front door was open.

The living room had been searched.

A chair was overturned.

Rosa’s phone lay broken on the floor.

There was blood near the kitchen.

But Rosa was gone.

On the wall, written in red lipstick, were four words:

SHE SHOULD HAVE STAYED SILENT.
