Chapter 14: The Man Behind the Desk
The acting CEO was Thomas Reed.
He had worked for Miriam before her death.
Sarah trusted him because her mother had once described him as “the only honest executive in the building.”
That description was exactly why Richard chose him.
Thomas had spent twelve years appearing loyal while secretly moving money, falsifying records and monitoring anyone who questioned Richard.
When police entered his office, Thomas activated a silent alarm.
Then he locked the executive floor.
Sarah was inside the boardroom with Evelyn.
Thomas entered carrying a gun.
“You should have sold the company,” he said.
Sarah stood.
“You forged the account in Evelyn’s name.”
“I created insurance.”
“For Richard?”
“For myself.”
Thomas revealed the final twist.
He had not merely helped hide Miriam’s murder.
He had planned it.
Miriam discovered that Thomas and Richard were stealing pension funds from company employees.
She intended to report them.
Thomas suggested frightening her with a staged mechanical failure.
Richard ordered Jason to damage the car.
But after the crash, Thomas convinced Richard to let Miriam die.
Then he used the secret to control him for twelve years.
“You all thought Richard was the monster at the center,” Thomas said. “He was only the monster I could manage.”
Evelyn moved subtly toward the conference table.
Thomas pointed the gun at her.
“Don’t.”
Sarah kept him talking.
“You sent Richard to take my baby.”
“I told him the child would eventually inherit your shares.”
“You knew he would try to kill her.”
“I knew he was predictable.”
Outside the locked floor, Daniel and police attempted to gain access.
Thomas placed a document in front of Sarah.
“Transfer your shares to me.”
“No.”
“Then your sister dies.”
Sarah picked up the pen.
Evelyn looked at her.
“Don’t.”
“You are not dying for a company.”
Sarah signed.
Thomas smiled.
Then Sarah turned the document around.
She had not signed her name.
She had written:
HE CONFESSED. CHECK THE CAMERA.
Thomas looked toward the ceiling.
A red light blinked above the boardroom screen.
The emergency board system had begun recording when he activated the building alarm.
His confession had been transmitted to the company’s secure server.
Thomas fired at the camera.
Evelyn threw the heavy glass water pitcher at his arm.
The gun discharged into the ceiling.
Sarah tackled him.
The three crashed against the conference table.
The doors burst open.
Daniel reached Sarah first.
Police arrested Thomas.
His recorded confession destroyed Richard’s remaining defense.
The following morning, the jury returned.
Richard Whitmore was found guilty on every major charge.
Murder.
Conspiracy.
Kidnapping.
Fraud.
Obstruction.
He showed no emotion until the judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Then Sarah stood to give her victim statement.
“You taught Jason that cruelty was strength. You taught me that silence was survival. You taught Mom that escape was impossible.”
Richard stared at her.
Sarah continued.
“But you were wrong about all three of us.”
She looked toward Jason, who sat in custody.
“Jason will answer for what he did.”
Then toward Evelyn.
“My sister survived being erased.”
Finally, she faced Richard.
“And I survived being your daughter.”
