Chapter 11: The Empty Incubator

Daniel reached the NICU before Sarah.
The incubator was empty.
Wires lay disconnected across the mattress.
A nurse stood near the door, pale and trembling.
“Where is my daughter?” Daniel demanded.
“A doctor transferred her for imaging.”
“Which doctor?”
“I thought he was from radiology.”
Hospital security locked down the building.
Camera footage showed a man in medical scrubs pushing a covered neonatal transport unit into a service elevator.
His mask hid most of his face.
But Sarah recognized his eyes.
Richard.
“He took her.”
Daniel held Sarah as her knees buckled.
“He can’t keep a premature baby alive without medical equipment,” the doctor warned. “She needs oxygen support and temperature control.”
Bennett ordered roadblocks at every major exit.
Evelyn remembered something.
“Richard owns an old private clinic outside the city.”
“It closed years ago,” Sarah said.
“He never sold it.”
Police raced toward the property.
Inside the abandoned clinic, Richard had connected baby Miriam to a portable oxygen unit.
He stood beside the incubator, speaking softly.
“You should have been Jason’s child,” he murmured. “Then this family would have had a proper heir.”
The door opened behind him.
Jason entered.
His face was bruised from escaping the factory.
“You said we were leaving.”
“We are.”
“With the baby?”
“She controls the trust.”
“She’s a newborn.”
“She is Sarah’s heir.”
Jason stared at his father.
“You want to kill her.”
Richard turned.
“I want to protect what belongs to us.”
Jason stepped back.
For years, Richard had fed his anger, rewarded his violence and convinced him that Sarah was the enemy.
But now Jason looked at the tiny infant struggling beneath the clear plastic hood.
Something cracked inside him.
“She didn’t do anything.”
“Neither did your mother,” Richard replied. “At first.”
Jason’s face changed.
“You said Mom caused the crash.”
“She caused every problem by refusing to obey.”
Jason finally understood.
His father had not protected him out of love.
Richard had used him.
The stairway assault had made Jason disposable.
The moment police closed in, Richard planned to blame everything on his son.
“You’re going to tell them I kidnapped the baby,” Jason said.
Richard reached for a syringe on the medical tray.
“You’ve always been unstable.”
Jason lunged.
They crashed against the incubator.
An alarm sounded.
Outside, police surrounded the building.
Sarah heard the alarm through the open doorway and ran before anyone could stop her.
She entered the room as Richard raised the syringe.
Jason grabbed his wrist.
“Take the baby!” Jason shouted.
Sarah rushed to the incubator.
Richard struck Jason across the head with a metal oxygen regulator.
Jason fell.
Richard turned toward Sarah.
“You should have died on those stairs.”
A gunshot cracked through the clinic.
Richard collapsed.
Behind him stood Rosa.
She had followed the police convoy.
Smoke curled from the gun in her hand.
Detective Bennett disarmed her immediately.
Sarah did not look at Richard.
She lifted her daughter into her arms while the neonatal team rushed forward.
Baby Miriam was alive.
But Jason lay unconscious on the floor.

And before paramedics carried him away, he whispered something to Sarah.
“There’s another recording.”
