Chapter 2 - The Ghost Under the Lights

"Get the press out. Now."

Christian’s command cut through the paralyzed staff like lightning. Private security teams immediately formed human walls against the surging paparazzi, ripping memory cards from cameras and forcing high-profile guests toward the grand exits. The ballroom devolved into frantic murmurs, designer dresses rustling against marble, and the nervous scrape of chairs.

In the center of the emptying hall, Elena remained on her knees in the pool of champagne and shattered crystal, her arms locked securely around her son. Leo was hyperventilating, his fingers twisted so deeply into her cheap cotton uniform that tearing him away would have required breaking his bones.

"Mommy, don't go into the dark room again," Leo whimpered, his small forehead pressed against the hollow of her collarbone. "The bad lady said you went to the clouds."

Elena’s heart fractured into a thousand pieces. "I'm right here, my sweet boy. I'm never leaving you again."

Victoria stood three feet away, trembling with rage, her knuckles white against her diamond-encrusted clutch. "Christian, this is an elaborate scam. Look at her! Your wife died in a burning car in Geneva three years ago. We identified the dental records. We held a funeral. This woman is a sick opportunist who preyed on a grieving toddler to extort the family!"

Christian didn't look at Victoria. He took slow, measured steps toward the woman on the floor. Every drop of his usual billionaire arrogance had vanished, replaced by an agonizing, disorienting shock. He sank to one knee, heedless of the champagne soaking into his tailored trousers.

He reached out a trembling hand, his long fingers hovering just inches from Elena's face.

"Elena?" he whispered, his voice splintered with grief and disbelief. "Is it really you?"

"You buried a stranger, Christian," Elena said, lifting her chin. She pulled off the heavy, smudged glasses with one hand, letting them drop onto the wet marble. She stared directly into his gray eyes—the same eyes she had fallen in love with six years ago, and the same eyes that had failed to see through the viper living under his roof. "You signed the death certificate without even looking at the body."

Christian flinched as if struck. "They said the fire... they said you were unrecognizable. Victoria handled the Swiss authorities. She told me—"

"Victoria paid them off," Elena hissed, her voice laced with venom.

Victoria let out a shrill, mocking laugh that echoed off the high ceiling. "Are you listening to this madwoman? Christian, she's mentally ill! She infiltrated our catering staff using forged papers. Call the police! Don't let her touch our son!"

"'Our son'?" Elena fired back, her hazel eyes blazing with feral fury. "You didn't carry him for nine months while hiding from assassins. You didn't bleed on a concrete floor in an abandoned warehouse while your hired thugs tried to smother him at birth!"

Victoria’s breath hitched. For a fraction of a second, raw panic flashed across her face before she smoothly buried it beneath indignation. "She's delusional! Security, I am the future mistress of this estate, and I order you to drag her out!"

"Stand down!" Christian bellowed, his voice slamming into the guards like a physical blow. The two burly men immediately stepped back, hands raised.

Christian turned his gaze back to Elena. He reached down and gently pushed back her dyed black hair, revealing a faint, crescent-shaped birthmark behind her left ear. A jagged breath tore from his chest.

"My God," Christian breathed, his eyes welling with tears. "It is you."

"Daddy!" Leo sobbed, shifting slightly to reach for Christian with one hand while keeping the other anchored to Elena's sleeve. "Mommy is cold! Take Mommy home!"

Christian reached to pull them both into his arms, but before his hands could touch Elena's shoulders, a sharp click echoed from the balcony above.

A red laser dot danced across the marble, snapping instantly onto the center of Elena's chest.

"Christian, get down!" Elena screamed, twisting her body instinctively over Leo.
