Chapter 11 - The Fall of the House

The dawn broke over Manhattan in shades of pale rose and gold, piercing through the morning fog that clung to the Hudson River. Outside the federal building in Lower Manhattan, the street was a barricade of press vans, satellite dishes, and heavily armed federal marshals.
Inside the private medical suite on the fourteenth floor, Elena sat on the edge of an examination bed, freshly bandaged and wearing clean clothes. Leo was fast asleep on the cot beside her, clutching a brand-new plush bear given to him by a sympathetic social worker. For the first time in three years, his small face looked peaceful, unburdened by fear.
Christian walked in, wearing a clean shirt, his chest tightly wrapped in medical bandages. He carried two paper cups of hot coffee.
"He's been out for two hours," Elena said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from Leo's forehead. "He wouldn't let go of my finger until he fell asleep."
Christian handed her a cup and sat in the chair next to her, looking down at their son. "The pediatricians checked him over. Apart from mild exhaustion, he's completely healthy. He kept telling the nurses that his mommy has superpowers."
A faint, tired smile touched Elena's lips. "He survived on instinct, Christian. He knew the women around you weren't real. He waited for me."
"He knew his mother," Christian said quietly. His gray eyes, usually so guarded and cold in corporate boardrooms, were full of deep, raw emotion. "The Department of Justice just released their initial statement. Thomas was arrested at his private hangar in Teterboro trying to board a jet to Dubai. The financial records on that server implicated forty-two high-ranking officials in the Blackwood syndicate."
"And Victoria?" Elena asked, her voice dropping.
"The coroner confirmed her remains in the basement rubble," Christian said, staring into his coffee. "She chose her path. She thought she could destroy our family to build an empire."
Elena took a slow sip of the coffee, looking out the reinforced window at the rising sun. "What happens now, Christian? The Sterling name is splashed across every tabloid in the world. The company..."
"I don't give a damn about the company," Christian interrupted, his voice fiercely decisive. He reached across the small gap between them, his large, warm hand covering hers on the mattress. "I spent the last three years building wealth because I had nothing else left to live for. But none of it matters. The only thing that ever mattered was sitting right in front of me."
Elena looked down at their joined hands. The scars on her wrist from the restraints at the Blackwood clinic were still visible, a permanent reminder of the nightmare she had endured.
"I spent three years hating you, Christian," she confessed, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Every time they drugged me, every time they told me you had replaced me with Victoria, I forced myself to hate you just to stay alive."
"I know," Christian whispered, his thumb gently wiping away her tear. "And I will spend the rest of my life making up for every second I failed to protect you."
Leo stirred on the cot, rubbing his eyes with tiny fists. He blinked against the morning light, looked at Elena, and then looked at Christian.
"Daddy?" Leo mumbled sleepily. "Are we going home now?"
May you like
Christian smiled, leaning over to scoop the boy gently into his arms, bringing him close so Elena could wrap her arms around both of them.
"Yeah, Leo," Christian said, his voice thick with emotion as he held his family tight. "We're going home."
