Chapter 2 — The Evidence They Couldn’t Destroy

Richard spent the night in a private holding facility.
But his lawyers moved faster than anyone expected.
By morning…
The news changed.
The story changed.
And somehow…
Richard became the victim.
His lawyers released a statement claiming:
“Mr. Mercer was falsely accused by an unstable family member seeking revenge.”
Arthur watched the television silently.
Lily sat beside him on the couch.
Her face was still bruised.
Her eyes still carried fear.
“Dad…”
Arthur turned.
“Yes?”
“Did you know something like this would happen?”
He looked away.
“I knew powerful people always protect themselves.”
Lily lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Arthur froze.
“For what?”
“For ruining your life.”
The words hurt him more than anything Richard had done.
Arthur moved closer.
“Lily.”
She looked at him.
“You didn’t ruin my life.”
He touched her hand.
“You reminded me why I built it.”
That afternoon, Arthur received a message.
One file.
One video.
One truth.
The cracked phone Lily left beneath the dining table had captured everything.
Not just Richard hitting her.
Not just Victoria covering it up.
Something worse.
A conversation before the attack.
Richard’s voice appeared clearly.
“She’ll never leave.”
Victoria laughed.
“Why would she? She has nowhere else to go.”
Richard replied:
“And if she tries?”
A pause.
“Then we make sure nobody believes her.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
His anger became colder.
This wasn’t a moment of violence.
This was a system.

A machine designed to destroy his daughter.
And machines needed to be dismantled.
