Chapter 3 - THE MAN BEHIND VANESSA

Marcus Caldwell had always believed the empire should have belonged to him.

Richard had built it.

Marcus had nearly destroyed it.

Nine years earlier, an internal audit uncovered millions of dollars in unauthorized transfers.

Richard had given his brother one choice.

Resign quietly or face prosecution.

Marcus resigned.

Then disappeared.

Until now.

Nathan paced across the office.

“Why would Vanessa work with him?”

Richard looked exhausted.

“Money.”

“She already has money.”

“Not Caldwell money.”

Nathan stopped.

“She was going to marry me.”

Richard nodded.

“And gain access to the family trust.”

Emily felt uncomfortable hearing something so private.

She moved toward the door.

“I should go.”

Richard stopped her.

“No.”

Emily turned.

“You’re involved now.”

“I never wanted to be.”

“I know.”

Richard’s expression softened.

“And I’m sorry.”

The words surprised her.

Richard Caldwell rarely apologized.

He continued.

“You were attacked in my home because someone believed you knew something.”

“But I don’t.”

“Maybe they think you do.”

Daniel entered.

“I found Marcus.”

Nathan turned.

“Where?”

“He owns a shell company registered in Delaware.”

Richard frowned.

“That doesn’t tell us where he is.”

“No.”

Daniel placed a photograph on the desk.

“But this does.”

Vanessa was leaving a downtown hotel.

Marcus was beside her.

The photograph had been taken six days earlier.

Nathan stared at it.

His face went blank.

Emily could almost see something breaking inside him.

His engagement.

His trust.

Maybe his entire understanding of the woman he planned to marry.

Richard touched his shoulder.

Nathan pulled away.

“I’m fine.”

Nobody believed him.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

He stared at the screen.

Then answered.

“What?”

Vanessa was crying.

“Nathan, please let me explain.”

“Start with Marcus.”

Silence.

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“I’m listening.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

“He contacted me.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

Emily watched Nathan’s hand tighten around the phone.

“What did he want?”

“To warn me about your father.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

Nathan continued.

“And you believed him?”

“At first, no.”

“What changed?”

Another pause.

“He showed me documents.”

“What documents?”

“Proof that Richard was planning to cut you out of the company.”

Richard shook his head.

Nathan looked at him.

“Where are you?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Home.”

“Stay there.”

“Nathan—”

“Stay there.”

He ended the call.

Daniel immediately said, “Don’t go alone.”

Nathan grabbed his keys.

“I’m not asking permission.”

Richard blocked the doorway.

“You’re angry.”

“You noticed?”

“Marcus wants you angry.”

Nathan stared at his father.

Richard continued.

“If this is about the trust, everything they’ve done has been designed to manipulate you.”

Nathan looked toward the photograph.

“Then I want to know why.”

Emily spoke before she could stop herself.

“Because you were supposed to sign something.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She remembered Vanessa’s words.

Once he signs, this house won’t matter anymore.

Nathan slowly nodded.

“The prenup.”

Richard’s face changed.

“What?”

“The revised prenuptial agreement.”

“When were you signing it?”

“Tomorrow.”

Richard stared at his son.

“Who revised it?”

“Vanessa’s attorney.”

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

“Get me a copy.”

Nathan opened his email.

Seconds later, the document appeared.

Daniel searched through it.

Page twelve.

Page nineteen.

Page thirty-four.

Then he stopped.

“There.”

Richard leaned closer.

A clause had been inserted beneath dense legal language.

In the event of Nathan’s death, incapacity, or permanent disability within five years of marriage, Vanessa would receive control over his voting shares.

Nathan read it twice.

His face lost all color.

“That wasn’t in the original.”

Richard’s voice became cold.

“No.”

Emily felt a chill.

The necklace suddenly seemed small.

This wasn’t about humiliation.

It wasn’t even about theft.

It was about control of an empire.

Nathan stared at the document.

Then his phone buzzed.

A text message.

From Vanessa.

He opened it.

One sentence.

COME ALONE OR EMILY WILL REGRET WHAT SHE SAW.

Nathan looked up.

Emily’s stomach dropped.

“What does it say?”

He didn’t answer.

He handed her the phone.

Emily read the message.

Her blood went cold.

Because she finally understood.

May you like

Vanessa hadn’t planted the necklace because Emily had seen something.

Vanessa had planted it because she was afraid Emily eventually would.
