Chapter 11 - THE ORDER

Emily confronted Richard that evening.

He read the message.

His hands began shaking.

“You know what this means.”

Richard sat down.

Emily remained standing.

“Who gave the order?”

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t lie to me again.”

“I’m not.”

“You knew my father’s death wasn’t an accident.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Marcus was involved.”

“I suspected.”

“Did Marcus order it?”

Richard looked at her.

“I always assumed he did.”

“Assumed?”

“There was never proof.”

Emily slammed the photograph onto the table.

“Then what is this?”

Richard studied it.

“Marcus wants you angry.”

“I am angry.”

“He wants you to blame someone.”

“Shouldn’t I?”

“Yes.”

Richard looked at her.

“But blame the right person.”

Daniel entered with Detective Collins.

They had reviewed old company records.

The scaffolding contractor responsible for the fatal collapse had received a payment forty-eight hours after Emily’s father died.

The money came from a private account.

Not Marcus’s.

Richard’s.

Emily stared at him.

Richard looked genuinely shocked.

“I never made that payment.”

Collins placed the record on the table.

“It has your authorization.”

“It’s forged.”

Nathan entered with his arm in a sling.

“Like my signatures.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

The forgery style matched.

Marcus had been using Richard’s identity for years.

But there was another signature.

Helen Caldwell.

Richard’s late wife.

Nathan’s mother.

Nathan stared at it.

“That’s impossible.”

Richard looked devastated.

Helen had died six years earlier.

Emily whispered, “Was she involved?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

But his certainty sounded forced.

Daniel searched old archived emails.

Hours passed.

Then they found one.

Helen to Marcus.

Sixteen years earlier.

WE NEED TO FIX THIS BEFORE RICHARD FINDS OUT.

Nathan sat down.

Nobody spoke.

Emily read the sentence again.

Richard looked like he had been struck.

“My wife knew.”

Another email appeared.

Marcus to Helen.

THE ELECTRICIAN WON’T STAY QUIET.

Then Helen’s response.

HANDLE IT.

Emily felt the room disappear around her.

Her father.

The accident.

The cover-up.

Nathan’s mother.

Richard’s wife.

All connected.

Nathan whispered, “Mom ordered it?”

Daniel shook his head.

“We don’t know what ‘handle it’ meant.”

Emily looked at him.

“My father died three days later.”

No one answered.

Then Detective Collins found an attachment.

An audio file.

Helen’s voice.

Marcus’s voice.

And a third man.

The recording began.

Helen sounded frightened.

“I said pay him off.”

Marcus answered.

“He wouldn’t take the money.”

“I never told you to hurt him.”

Marcus laughed.

“You told me to handle it.”

Helen’s voice broke.

“What did you do?”

Marcus responded with five words.

“What had to be done.”

Emily closed her eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Marcus had killed her father.

Helen had helped cover up the crime afterward.

And Richard had spent years protecting the reputation of a family that had never deserved protecting.

Nathan stood.

“I’m ending it.”

Richard looked at him.

“What?”

“The company.”

Nathan’s voice hardened.

“Everything Marcus wants.”

Richard stared at his son.

Nathan continued.

“He wants Caldwell Development.”

“Then what are you suggesting?”

“We take it away from him.”

Emily understood before Richard did.

May you like

Nathan wasn’t talking about surrendering.

He was talking about destroying Marcus’s reason to keep fighting.
