Chapter 4: The Voice Beneath the Floor

The investigation shocked all of Mexico.

Television crews gathered outside Patricia's house as forensic teams documented every inch of the concealed chamber.

Patricia pleaded guilty to kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and child abuse.

She received a sentence that guaranteed she would spend decades behind bars.

Yet the courtroom remained silent when Leo stood before the judge.

He didn't ask for revenge.

He looked once at the woman he had once called Aunt Patricia and quietly said,

"I hope nobody is ever as lonely as you."

Even Patricia couldn't meet his eyes.

Months passed.

Leo slowly learned to sleep without waking in panic.

He returned to school.

He laughed again.

Some nights he still asked Daniel to leave the bedroom door open, and Daniel never refused.

Inés remained convinced she had heard her brother because siblings share a bond adults often fail to understand.

No doctor could explain it.

No psychologist could either.

Daniel stopped trying.

Some miracles didn't need explanations.

One warm spring afternoon, the Rivas family planted a young lemon tree in their backyard to replace the one Leo had last played beside before he disappeared.

As they covered its roots with fresh soil, Leo slipped his small hand into Inés'.

"Thank you for listening."

She smiled.

"I always will."

The wind gently rustled the new leaves overhead.

For the first time in ten long months...

The Rivas family stood together beneath the sunlight.

Not because fate had been kind.

May you like

But because one little girl had believed the impossible...

...and one father had chosen to listen.
