Chapter 3: Patricia's Secret

Patricia ran.
She barely reached the foyer before the front door swung open.
Two security guards from the gated community stood outside, alerted by neighbors who had heard Mariana's screams.
Patricia froze.
Daniel stepped into the hallway carrying Leo in his arms.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Call the police."
Patricia's composure shattered.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this!"
Everyone turned toward her.
She covered her face with trembling hands.
"I never wanted to hurt him."
The confession spilled out in broken pieces.
Ten months earlier, Patricia had been drowning in debt.
She had secretly borrowed money from dangerous lenders.
When Daniel inherited a valuable piece of family land from their late father, resentment consumed her.
She convinced herself that if Leo disappeared, Daniel and Mariana would fall apart emotionally, eventually selling the land cheaply.
She planned to return Leo after a few days.
She had built the hidden crawlspace beneath the old house months earlier during renovations, believing no one would ever discover it.
But every day became harder than the last.
Leo recognized her.
He begged to go home.
Neighbors searched everywhere.
Police expanded the investigation.
Fear trapped Patricia inside her own lie.
So she moved to Querétaro...
...bringing the hidden room with her during another expensive renovation.
She kept Leo alive with food and water through a concealed hatch hidden behind the fake fireplace.
Enough to survive.
Never enough to live.
Daniel stared at his sister with disbelief.
"You listened to your own nephew cry every night."
Patricia broke down completely.
"I thought eventually he'd stop calling for you."
Leo quietly answered from his father's arms.
"I never stopped."
Minutes later...
Police vehicles flooded the quiet neighborhood.
Officers uncovered the hidden entrance behind the fireplace exactly where Leo described it.
Inside, investigators found children's drawings covering the walls.
Every picture showed the same thing.
A little boy...
Holding hands with his family beneath a bright yellow sun.

Every drawing was signed with one heartbreaking sentence.
Please don't forget me.
