Chapter 9 - The Bride Changes Sides

I didn’t trust Vanessa.
I barely wanted to hear her voice.
But criminals become careless when they believe the people around them belong to them.
Preston believed Vanessa belonged to him.
That made her useful.
She arrived at the hospital wearing yesterday’s wedding dress under a borrowed coat.
Her makeup was gone.
Her eyes were swollen.
The perfect bride looked exhausted.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
She swallowed.
“I was awful to Sophie.”
“Yes.”
“I saw the blood and worried about my dress.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know why I said that.”
“Because that was what mattered to you.”
She flinched.
“I deserve that.”
I folded my arms.
“Why are you here?”
Vanessa placed her phone on the table.
“Preston has been using a hidden messaging app.”
Agent Kim leaned forward.
“You have access?”
“His tablet was linked to my account.”
She unlocked a folder.
Hundreds of messages appeared.
Preston to Dad.
Preston to Mom.
Preston to Ethan.
Plans.
Amounts.
Instructions.
One message from Preston to Ethan read:
Put the bracelet in the kid’s other pocket. Two stolen items makes Evelyn panic faster.
Another from Dad:
No injuries. No police. This is pressure, not chaos.
And then one from Mom.
My mother.
Use Sophie. Evelyn will surrender anything if the child is threatened.
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa whispered, “I’m sorry.”
I reread the words.
Use Sophie.
Not Preston’s idea.
My mother’s.
Agent Kim carefully photographed the screen.
“Vanessa, do you understand these messages may expose you as well?”
“Yes.”
“Why cooperate?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Because Preston emptied our joint account and left me at the hotel.”
That sounded more like Vanessa.
“At least you’re honest.”
“He also planned to blame me for the offshore accounts.”
“Did you know about the fraud?”
“I knew money was moving. I didn’t know it was stolen.”
Agent Kim’s expression made clear that ignorance would need to be proven.
Vanessa scrolled further.
“There’s more.”
She opened an audio file.
Preston’s voice filled the room.
“Once Evelyn signs, we sell. Dad replaces the company money. Ethan backs the story if anyone asks questions about Sophie’s account.”
Then Mom’s voice.
“And if Evelyn goes to the police?”
Preston laughed.
“Who are they going to believe? Me or the sister who couldn’t even control her own kid?”
My hands curled into fists.
Then Dad spoke.
“Nobody touches Sophie.”
A pause.
Preston answered.
“Relax.”
I wanted to hate Dad slightly less for that sentence.
Then the recording continued.
Dad said:
“If the child gets scared, fine. That helps. But no marks. We need Evelyn emotional, not homicidal.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa whispered, “That was recorded three days ago.”
I closed my eyes.
They had discussed my daughter like a tool.
A button to push.
A weakness to exploit.
Agent Kim’s phone rang.
He answered, listened, then looked at me.
“They found the house.”
“Preston?”
“Gone.”
My parents?”
“Gone too.”
“Again?”
“He left fifteen minutes before agents arrived.”
I felt rage rising.
Then Kim’s expression changed.
“But they recovered the document case.”
“Good.”
“There are company ledgers inside.”
“Even better.”
He paused.
“And a handwritten note.”
My stomach tightened.
“From whom?”
“Your mother.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
Three words had been written across the top.
PLAN B – SOPHIE.
Underneath was a list of instructions.
School address.
Bus schedule.
My work schedule.
And the name of Sophie’s babysitter.

Whatever my mother meant by Plan B, it had been prepared before the wedding.
