Chapter 11 - Four Hours

We had less than four hours.

Margaret was already making calls.

“Challenge the signature.”

“I am.”

“Freeze the transaction.”

“I’m trying.”

“Can they sell without me?”

“With the forged transfer in place, yes.”

My blood boiled.

“Then prove it’s forged.”

Agent Kim stepped in.

“The criminal investigation helps.”

“How fast?”

“Not as fast as corporate lawyers move when ninety million dollars is on the table.”

For the next hour, the hospital room became a war room.

Laptops.

Calls.

Documents.

Affidavits.

Marcus sent security footage.

Vanessa turned over Preston’s messages.

Agent Kim submitted notice of suspected financial fraud to Hartwell’s attorneys.

Then Margaret smiled.

“What?”

“Your grandmother.”

I blinked.

“What about her?”

“She included a poison pill.”

“A what?”

“A clause Preston apparently forgot.”

Margaret opened the trust agreement.

“Any transfer of your voting rights made within seventy-two hours of a criminal coercion event requires in-person verification by two independent trustees.”

I almost laughed.

“Grandma really didn’t trust anyone.”

“She loved your family.”

“That isn’t what I said.”

Margaret smiled.

“No. It isn’t.”

At 2:18 p.m., Hartwell suspended the closing.

At 2:24, my forged transfer was formally disputed.

At 2:31, Preston called.

I answered.

“You ruined everything!” he screamed.

“No, Preston. You did.”

“You think you won?”

“I think you hit my daughter and got caught.”

“You always were dramatic.”

My hands tightened around the phone.

“You swung a wooden board at an eight-year-old.”

“She shouldn’t have been standing there.”

“She was sitting down.”

He went silent.

I continued.

“Mom’s messages are with federal investigators.”

Another silence.

Then he laughed.

“Mom will fold.”

“You all will.”

“You have no idea what Dad has done for this family.”

“Stolen three million?”

His breathing stopped.

I knew I had hit the right nerve.

“Who told you that?”

“Enjoy guessing.”

He lowered his voice.

“If Dad goes down, the company goes down.”

“Then it goes down.”

“You’d destroy Grandma’s legacy?”

“No.”

I looked at Sophie.

“I’m done confusing a building with a family.”

Preston swore.

Then I heard an airport announcement behind him.

Gate numbers.

Boarding information.

My eyes snapped toward Agent Kim.

I pointed at the phone.

Airport.

Kim immediately started tracing.

Preston kept talking.

“You were always jealous of me.”

I nearly laughed.

“Preston, I am thirty-seven years old. I don’t want your life.”

“You wanted Mom and Dad to love you the way they loved me.”

That one landed.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was true.

Once.

A long time ago.

“Maybe,” I said.

He sounded pleased.

Then I finished.

“But after last night, I wouldn’t trade places with you for anything.”

Agent Kim wrote something.

O’HARE. TERMINAL 5.

Officers were moving.

Preston suddenly stopped speaking.

Then I heard another voice through the phone.

My mother.

“Give me that.”

The line rustled.

“Evelyn?”

“Where’s Dad?”

Mom started crying.

“Your father left us.”

“What?”

“He took the money.”

“What money?”

“The reserve account.”

“How much?”

Her answer came out as a whisper.

“Twelve million dollars.”

I looked at Agent Kim.

Mom continued.

“Charles planned this from the beginning.”

Then she said the sentence I never expected.

“Preston wasn’t running the scheme.”

“Who was?”

May you like

“Your father.”
