Chapter 7: The Last Move

Julian’s testimony changed everything.

He identified judges, senators, bankers, and corporate executives who had accepted money from Victor.

Within a month, thirty-two people were charged.

But Victor Apex still had one final weapon.

From jail, he filed a legal challenge claiming Elena had no right to the Apex shares.

His attorneys argued that Elizabeth had surrendered her ownership before her death.

Apex Global’s remaining board supported him.

They did not care who was innocent.

They cared who controlled the company.

The case went to court.

On the morning of the hearing, Elena stood outside the courthouse with Margaret.

Reporters shouted questions.

“Miss Marlowe, are you trying to take control of Apex Global?”

“Will you change your last name?”

“Do you believe Victor Apex murdered your mother?”

Elena entered without answering.

Victor sat at the defense table in an expensive dark suit.

No handcuffs.

No visible fear.

He looked almost as powerful as he had at the gala.

His attorney presented a signed transfer agreement supposedly showing that Elizabeth had given her shares to Victor.

The document appeared legitimate.

The signature matched.

The date was correct.

Even Margaret looked shaken.

Victor smiled at Elena from across the courtroom.

Then Elena’s attorney called the final witness.

A frail man with white hair entered using a cane.

Victor’s smile vanished.

His name was Samuel Price.

He had been the Apex family’s attorney forty years earlier.

Samuel testified that Elizabeth had never signed the transfer agreement.

“I prepared the original document,” he said. “She refused to sign it.”

Victor’s lawyer held up the contract.

“Then how do you explain this signature?”

Samuel looked at Victor.

“Victor forged it.”

The courtroom erupted.

The judge called for order.

Samuel produced the original company ledger, which he had hidden for decades.

It confirmed Elizabeth’s ownership.

It also contained a letter from her.

The judge allowed Elena to read it.

Her hands trembled as she unfolded the page.

To my daughter, Elena:

Power is not the money people possess or the fear they create. Real power is the ability to choose what kind of person you become when no one can stop you.

My brother chose control. I chose you.

If these shares ever become yours, do not use them to build another throne. Use them to repair what our family broke.

Elena lowered the letter.

The courtroom was silent.

The judge ruled that Elizabeth’s shares legally belonged to Elena.

Combined with shares controlled by Margaret and several employee pension trusts, Elena now held enough voting power to remove Victor from Apex Global permanently.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded her again.

This time, Elena stopped.

“Are you the new head of Apex Global?” one reporter shouted.

Elena looked directly into the cameras.

“No.”

The crowd quieted.

“I’m the person who is going to make sure no one like Victor Apex ever controls it again.”

That afternoon, the board was dismissed.

The company was placed under independent management.

Stolen pension funds were restored through the sale of Victor’s private assets.

Victims received compensation.

Apex Tower was removed from the family’s control.

But one question remained.

What would become of the building where it had all started?

Elena already knew.
