Chapter 5: The Ballroom Hostage

The remaining guests froze.

Someone screamed.

The string players abandoned their instruments and ducked behind the stage.

Julian grabbed Elena and pressed the gun against her temple.

“Drop the drive.”

Elena held it tightly.

Victor remained on the stage.

“Julian,” he said. “Control yourself.”

Julian stared at him in disbelief.

“You told me to handle her.”

“I told you to remove her quietly.”

“She knows everything!”

Victor looked around the ballroom.

Dozens of phones were raised.

Guests were filming.

Outside the glass entrance, police lights flashed.

Victor understood what Julian did not.

The family’s power depended on maintaining the appearance of control.

“Elena,” Victor said, his voice calm, “give him the drive.”

“You’ll kill me either way.”

“No one is going to kill anyone.”

Julian pushed the gun harder against her head.

“She’s right.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Put the weapon down.”

“You think I’m taking the fall for you?”

A murmur swept through the room.

Victor descended from the stage.

“Everything you have exists because of me.”

“No,” Julian snapped. “Everything I’ve done was because of you.”

Victor stopped.

For the first time, Elena saw genuine hatred between father and son.

Julian looked toward the guests.

“He ordered all of it. The offshore accounts. The bribes. Thomas Marlowe’s death. Elizabeth’s death.”

Victor’s voice dropped.

“Be quiet.”

“You said family survival came first.”

“I said be quiet.”

Julian laughed.

“You’re still trying to save yourself.”

Elena slowly moved her thumb across the flash drive.

It had a small wireless activation switch.

She pressed it.

In the control booth above the ballroom, the presentation system came alive.

The Apex logo vanished from the giant screen.

Victor turned.

A video appeared.

Thomas Marlowe sat in a dim office, looking exhausted but determined.

“If this recording is being shown, I am probably dead.”

The room fell silent.

Thomas described the pension theft, the bribed officials, the secret accounts, and the threats against his family.

Documents flashed across the screen.

Bank records.

Emails.

Security footage.

Then came an audio recording of Victor speaking to Crane.

“Thomas’s car leaves at seven. Make sure he doesn’t reach the courthouse.”

Victor stared at the screen.

His empire was collapsing in real time.

Julian’s grip loosened.

Elena twisted away.

A gunshot shattered one of the chandeliers.

Guests dropped to the floor as crystal rained down.

Julian aimed at Elena again.

Before he could fire, Margaret struck his wrist with the heavy leather briefcase.

The gun skidded across the marble.

Elena kicked it away.

Federal agents rushed into the ballroom.

Julian was thrown to the floor and handcuffed.

Victor did not run.

He stood beneath the damaged chandelier, watching his own voice condemn him.

An agent approached.

“Victor Apex, you are under arrest.”

Victor looked at Elena.

“You think you’ve won?”

Elena met his eyes.

“No. I think everyone you crushed finally gets to speak.”

The agents placed him in handcuffs.

As they led him away, Victor leaned close to Elena.

“You still don’t understand what your father did.”

Elena frowned.

Victor smiled without warmth.

“He wasn’t trying to expose me at the end.”

May you like

“He was trying to protect me.”

“No,” Victor whispered. “He was trying to protect Julian.”
