Chapter 2: The Daughter Who Never Left

Arthur did not move when the investigators approached.
“This is a private event,” he said.
The lead investigator, Special Agent Marcus Hale, displayed his credentials.
“Not anymore.”
Guests began backing away.
Victoria stepped toward Celeste.
“You planned this humiliation.”
Celeste’s expression remained steady.
“No. You planned the humiliation. I planned for what came after.”
Hale informed Arthur that Ashford Maritime was under investigation for bribery, fraudulent insurance claims, illegal weapons transportation, and the falsification of maritime safety records.
Arthur laughed once.
“You expect anyone to believe my disgraced daughter uncovered all that?”
Admiral Reed’s voice cut through the room.
“Captain Ashford uncovered it while investigating the sinking of the Red Meridian.”
Celeste’s scars tightened as she remembered freezing water, burning steel, and men screaming beneath the Sudanese coast.
The bulkhead collapse had not been an accident.
The ship had been carrying military navigation components that were never declared.
Her family’s company had modified the cargo manifest.
When the illegal shipment shifted during the storm, the internal structure failed.
Twenty-seven sailors had nearly died.
Three never returned home.
Arthur looked at her.
“You joined the Navy to punish me?”
“I joined because you told everyone I was weak.”
She moved closer.
“I stayed because I discovered what honor looked like outside this family.”
Julian rushed toward the investigators.
“Our attorneys will destroy this.”
Agent Hale turned to him.
“You should call one quickly. Your signature appears on six falsified manifests.”
Julian stopped.
Victoria looked between her father and brother.
For the first time, fear replaced arrogance.
Then Arthur smiled.
“You still cannot take the company.”
Celeste studied him.
Arthur leaned close enough that only she could hear.
“Because your grandmother’s trust requires every named heir to be alive.”
A cold realization moved through Celeste.
There had been four Ashford heirs.
Celeste.
Victoria.
Julian.

And their youngest sister, Eleanor, who had supposedly died sixteen years earlier.
Arthur whispered, “You are not the only daughter this family erased.”
