Chapter 11: The False Hero

Celeste returned to the federal building pretending she knew nothing.
Hale greeted her with sympathy.
“We found Reed.”
“No,” Celeste lied. “But I know where he is going.”
She offered Hale a false location.
Within minutes, Hale contacted Arthur’s attorney.
Reed intercepted the call.
The truth unfolded quickly.
Hale had discovered his father’s murder years earlier, but instead of seeking justice, he blackmailed Arthur.
Together, they created shell companies, redirected military contracts, and prepared to collapse Ashford Maritime at the perfect moment.
Celeste’s return threatened them both.
The Red Meridian disaster had nearly exposed the entire operation.
Julian’s sabotage had been reckless, but Hale had helped erase the investigation afterward.
Celeste confronted Hale inside the evidence archive.
He did not bother denying it.
“My father died because of your family.”
“So you became exactly like them?”
“I became powerful enough to make them pay.”
“You made sailors pay. Passengers. Innocent workers.”
Hale’s expression turned cold.
“There are no innocent people inside empires.”
He locked the archive doors and set fire to the remaining files.
Smoke filled the room.
Celeste fought him between rows of burning evidence.
Hale pressed her against a metal cabinet, striking the scars across her back.
Pain exploded through her body.
For a moment, she could not breathe.
Then she heard Eleanor’s voice through the intercom.
“Celeste, get down.”
The emergency sprinklers activated.
Reed’s tactical team broke through the doors.
Hale was arrested.
But as officers dragged him away, he laughed.
“Arthur already won.”
Celeste ran to the holding wing.
Her father’s cell was empty.
In his place, they found a dead guard.
