CHAPTER 3 â THE BETRAYAL BEHIND THE DINNER

The next morning, Helen received an unexpected call.
It was from the restaurantâs financial department.
âMrs. Carter, there is something you need to know.â
Helen became serious.
âWhat happened?â
âThere was an attempt to remove your ownership rights.â
Her expression changed.
âWho tried?â
A pause.
Then:
âMarlene Whitmore.â
Helen closed her eyes.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The dinner.
The humiliation.
The words.
âKnow your place.â
It was never about a meal.
It was about control.
Marlene had planned to embarrass Helen because she believed an old woman with simple clothes could be easily pushed aside.
But she had underestimated her.
Later that day, Helen confronted Michael.
âDid you know your wife was trying to access my company shares?â
Michael looked shocked.
âNo.â
Helen watched him carefully.
âAre you sure?â
His silence answered before his words did.
Finally, he whispered:
âShe told me she was helping with your finances.â
Helen laughed quietly.
Not happily.
Sadly.
âHelping?â
Michael looked ashamed.
âI didnât know.â
âThat has always been your problem.â
She looked at her son.
âYou donât see cruelty when it happens quietly.â
Michael lowered his head.
For years, he had ignored small moments.
The comments.
The disrespect.
The way Marlene spoke to his mother.
Because admitting the truth meant admitting he had failed her.
Then Helen received another message.
A security video.
From the restaurant.
The footage showed Marlene speaking with a lawyer.
And the words on the recording changed everything.
âSheâs old. She wonât fight.â
Helen watched the screen.
Her face remained calm.
But something inside her finally broke.
May you like
Not her heart.
Her patience.
