CHAPTER 2 â THE SECRET SHE NEVER TOLD HER SON

The private dining room was completely different from the main restaurant.
Warm lighting.
Quiet music.
A long wooden table.
Executives who had greeted Helen with respect.
Michael stood outside the door, watching through the glass.
For the first time in years, he felt like a stranger in his motherâs world.
Inside the room, Helen sat across from the restaurant investors.
âWe need to discuss the expansion plan,â one executive said.
Helen nodded.
âBefore expansion, we fix the staff situation.â
The executive smiled.
âThat is exactly why people trust you.â
Outside, Michael heard those words.
Trust.
A word he suddenly realized he had lost.
When the meeting ended, Helen walked outside.
Michael immediately approached.
âMom.â
She stopped.
âYes?â
His voice was smaller than usual.
âWhy didnât you tell me you owned this place?â
Helen looked at him for a long moment.
Then she answered:
âBecause I didnât need your approval to be successful.â
Michael looked away.
âThatâs not what I meant.â
âIsnât it?â
The question made him silent.
Helen continued.
âWhen you were young, I told you every dream I had was no longer important because yours mattered more.â
Her eyes softened.
âI thought giving you everything meant you would always remember me.â
Michael swallowed.
âI do remember you.â
âNo.â
Helen shook her head gently.
âYou remember what I did for you.â
The truth landed heavily.
âYou remember the lunches. The tuition. The sacrifices.â
A pause.
âBut you forgot the woman who made them.â
Michael had no answer.
Then his phone rang.
It was Marlene.
He answered.
Her voice was nervous.
âMichael, we need to talk.â
He walked away.
But Helen saw the fear in his eyes.

Something was wrong.
And she was about to discover why.
