CHAPTER 1 — The Night They Broke Emily

The ballroom of the Preston Whitmore Estate had hosted presidents, billionaires, and royalty.

But never had it witnessed something so cruel.

Under the golden glow of hundreds of crystal lights, Emily Whitmore knelt on the cold marble floor.

Eight months pregnant.

Her emerald gown was stained with water.

Her hands trembled as she carefully washed Sophia Laurent’s feet.

The entire room watched.

Nobody stopped it.

Nobody dared.

Sophia sat comfortably in her chair, smiling as if Emily’s humiliation was entertainment.

“Careful,” Sophia said softly. “You wouldn’t want to hurt the baby.”

A few guests looked away.

But most remained silent.

Because Preston Whitmore was powerful.

And powerful people protected their own.

Emily slowly lifted her eyes.

Across the room stood the man who had promised to love her forever.

Her husband.

Preston.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't ashamed.

He was smiling.

“Maybe now you’ll understand,” Preston said, raising his glass. “You forgot your place.”

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because Emily remembered when Preston had held her hand and whispered:

“No one will ever hurt you while I’m here.”

That man no longer existed.

The woman kneeling on the floor wasn't weak.

She was waiting.

Waiting for the right moment.

Because Preston had no idea what her father had left behind.

And he had no idea that tonight would be the last night he controlled her life.
