Chapter 14 - THE COLLAPSE

Daniel’s plan had been simple.

Destroy my company quietly.

Move enough clients into DVA.

Sell his stake.

Leave me with damaged finances.

Let Carmen become Camila’s main caregiver.

Then use my work schedule against me in custody negotiations.

He had been preparing my downfall while sleeping beside me.

The USB contained everything.

Messages.

Voice notes.

Financial projections.

Even a spreadsheet titled POST-DIVORCE.

My name appeared in one column.

Mariana - expected settlement pressure.

Camila appeared in another.

Custody leverage.

I stared at those two words for a long time.

Custody leverage.

My daughter reduced to a negotiation tactic.

Laura submitted the evidence.

Daniel’s attorney withdrew three days later.

A second attorney replaced him.

Then a third.

Rodrigo filed a fraud complaint.

My company filed a civil claim for stolen confidential material.

The lender holding the forged 4.5 million peso agreement backed away from my assets after forensic review.

Carmen sold jewelry to cover debts Daniel had opened in her name.

Valeria moved out of the apartment after the utilities were shut off.

And Daniel?

Daniel finally lost everything he had tried to build with someone else’s money.

At our final divorce hearing, he looked exhausted.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

The forged authorizations.

The fake email.

The balcony video.

The custody leverage recording.

The financial theft.

The impersonation.

The affair itself mattered least.

His behavior mattered most.

I received primary custody.

Daniel received supervised visitation, subject to review after parenting classes and psychological assessment.

Carmen received no independent visitation.

The apartment remained mine.

Daniel was responsible for debts tied to his fraudulent activity.

When the judge finalized the divorce, I felt no triumph.

Just relief.

Outside the courtroom, Daniel waited.

“Mariana.”

I kept walking.

“Please.”

I stopped.

He looked thinner.

Older.

“I know sorry means nothing.”

“That’s the first accurate thing you’ve said in a while.”

He nodded.

“I loved you.”

“No.”

“I did.”

“You loved what I provided.”

His eyes filled.

“That’s not fair.”

“It’s extremely fair.”

“I was insecure.”

“You were dishonest.”

“I was ashamed.”

“You were cruel.”

“I made terrible choices.”

“You made hundreds of choices.”

He lowered his head.

“Is there any chance you’ll forgive me?”

I thought about that.

Not because I was tempted.

Because I wanted to answer truthfully.

“One day, maybe I’ll stop being angry.”

He looked up.

“That’s not the same as forgiving me.”

“No.”

“And even forgiveness wouldn’t mean taking you back.”

His face crumpled.

I continued.

“You didn’t just betray me.”

I stepped closer.

“You heard your daughter knocking on a glass door because she was cold, and you decided your phone was more important.”

His tears fell.

“That is the part you will have to live with.”

I turned away.

He called after me.

“Does Camila hate me?”

I stopped.

“No.”

That seemed to give him hope.

Then I added,

“She’s three. She still loves you.”

His face twisted.

“And that makes what you did worse.”

I walked out.

I thought that was the end.

It wasn’t.

That night, my phone rang.

It was Laura.

“Mariana, I need you to come to the office tomorrow.”

“What happened?”

She hesitated.

“Rodrigo’s lawyers opened Daniel’s backup accounts.”

“And?”

“They found another transfer.”

My stomach tightened.

“How much?”

“600,000 pesos.”

“To who?”

Laura paused.

May you like

“An account opened in Camila’s name.”
