Chapter 15 - A Voice in the Wind

On Sunday morning, Mara and I drove Dad’s old Chevy truck—rebuilt from the ground up by Silas using original parts—up to the summit of Blackwood Ridge.
The sky was a brilliant, cloudless sapphire. The sun reflected off miles of snow-covered pines, turning the mountain valley into a sparkling sea of white and green.
The state highway department had installed a massive, reinforced steel guardrail where the old tin barrier used to be. Just beyond the rail, overlooking the vast, wild gorge below, sat a simple granite bench carved with a single name:
JULIAN ASHFORD (DAVID MILLER)
1982 – 2022
"A father, a protector, an honest man."
Mara knelt by the base of the stone, laying down a fresh bouquet of winter pine and white lilies. She ran her fingers across the letters, her breath fogging in the crisp morning air.
"We did it, Julian," she whispered softly to the stone. "June is safe. The truth is out. You can rest now."
I walked up beside her, the cold wind whipping through my dark hair, tangling the messy curls across my forehead—the exact same curls Julian used to tuck behind my ear.
I reached up to my neck. The heavy gold ring hung securely on a brand-new, unbreakable titanium chain against my chest, warm against my skin.
I didn't hide it under my collar anymore.
I let it catch the brilliant winter sunlight for the whole valley to see.
A gentle gust of mountain wind blew through the tops of the towering spruce trees, making the high branches whistle a low, rhythmic tune. It sounded familiar—almost like someone was whistling while pouring batter onto a hot skillet on a lazy Sunday morning.
I closed my eyes and smiled.

"I'm not hiding anymore, Dad," I whispered into the wind.
Mara stood up, wrapped her good arm around my shoulders, and pulled me close against her side. Together, we stood at the edge of the mountain, looking out across the vast world we had finally reclaimed—unafraid, unbroken, and free.
