Chapter 12 - The Net Closes

Blue and red strobe lights painted the shattered walls of Suite 904 in dizzying circles.
The rumble of heavy armored vehicles shook the pavement nine floors down. Megaphones echoed off the concrete towers of the hospital complex, drowning out the dying thunderstorm:
—This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Hostage Rescue Team and Special Investigations Division. Grant Ashford, you are surrounded. Order your private security detail to drop their weapons and stand down immediately—
Heavy boots were already pounding up the emergency stairwells. The tactical response team didn't use the elevators; they breached the ninth-floor fire doors with battering rams, sweeping the hallway with suppressed carbines and tactical shields.
"Federal agents! On the floor! Hands visible!"
Silas stepped back from the bed, tossing his knife onto the table and raising both hands flat in the air, standing directly in front of Mara and me like an iron shield.
"Agent Miller," Silas announced in a clear, carrying voice. "Room is secure. One hostile down, non-fatal thoracic wound. Two non-combatants requiring immediate medical transport."
A tall woman in a black tactical vest with gold FBI lettering walked through the doorway, her rifle pointed dead at Grant. She lowered the barrel slightly as she looked from Silas to Mara, and finally to me.
Her name tag read: M. MILLER — SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE.
Mara gasped from the bed. "Mary...?"
The agent took off her ballistic helmet, revealing short-cropped graying hair and the exact same steel-blue eyes as my father.
"Hey, Mara," the agent said softly, her tough exterior cracking for a split second as a tear cut through the gunpowder residue on her cheek. She walked past Grant’s groaning form without giving him a glance, knelt beside the bed, and touched Mara’s hand. "Julian called me five minutes before his truck went over Blackwood Ridge four years ago. He told me to wait until Grant overplayed his hand. He knew Grant wouldn't stop until he came for the girl."
"Your sister..." I whispered, staring at Mary’s face. "Dad's sister?"
Mary looked at me, a warm, genuine smile lighting up her fierce features. "I'm your Aunt Mary, June-bug. Your dad told me you were the bravest kid in this whole state. Looks like he wasn't exaggerating."
Behind her, two federal medics rushed in with a titanium gurney, immediately taking Mara’s vitals and wrapping her in thermal blankets.
"Vitals are stable, pulse is coming up," the lead medic reported. "We're taking her to the county trauma center under armed federal guard."
Two tactical officers grabbed Grant by his good arm, hoisting him off the floor. As they clicked heavy steel cuffs around his wrists, Grant tried to twist around, his eyes locking onto me with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You won't get a cent!" Grant snarled through his teeth, spittle and blood flecking his lips. "The Ashford trust belongs to the foundation! My lawyers will have me out on bail before breakfast!"
Mary Miller stood up, walked over to Grant, and shoved a certified legal document directly against his bleeding chest.
"The trust doesn't belong to the foundation, Grant," Mary said with ice in her voice. "Under Arthur Ashford’s original unbroken will, the entire estate defaults to Julian’s direct legal heir upon verification of bloodline. We just ran June's buccal swab against Julian’s preserved service record."

Mary leaned in, her voice slicing like a scalpel:
"You don't own the house anymore, Grant. You don't own the money. You don't even own the shirt on your back. You're broke, you're indicted on eighty-four counts of racketeering and capital murder, and you're going to spend the rest of your miserable life in ADX Florence."
