CHAPTER 1: THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE FOUND

The room remained frozen.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody even seemed to remember how to breathe.

The only sound was the quiet sobbing of the little girl standing beside the sofa.

Her father, Daniel Whitmore, stared at the hidden compartment beneath the furniture where a man had been lying in the darkness.

A stranger.

Inside his own home.

Inside the place where he thought his family was safe.

“Who is he?” Daniel repeated.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that appeared when anger was being held back by something stronger.

His wife, Vanessa, opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

The color had completely disappeared from her face.

The man beneath the sofa slowly moved.

His breathing was weak.

His body was covered with bruises, and his expensive clothes were torn.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Get out.”

The stranger looked at him with terrified eyes.

“I didn’t want to be here,” the man whispered.

Daniel stopped.

Because there was something familiar about that voice.

Something from the past.

“Who are you?”

The stranger swallowed painfully.

“My name is Ethan Cole.”

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him. He’s dangerous.”

But the little girl looked at her mother.

The fear in her eyes was no longer confusion.

It was realization.

“No, Mommy…”

Her small voice cut through the room.

“He’s not dangerous.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He was scared.”

Daniel turned toward his daughter.

“What do you mean?”

The girl wiped her tears.

“Every time you left for work, Mommy brought him here.”

Silence.

The sentence hit harder than anything else.

Daniel slowly looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?”

Vanessa shook her head immediately.

“She’s confused. She’s just a child.”

But Daniel noticed something.

His daughter never looked at her mother.

She only looked at the man beneath the sofa.

Because she had seen him before.

Many times.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“How long?”

Vanessa remained silent.

“How long has this man been inside my house?”

The stranger closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“Five years.”

Daniel felt his entire world collapse.

Five years.

A man had been hiding in his home for five years.

Watching his family.

Watching him.

And his wife had known.

Daniel stepped back slowly.

“Why?”

Ethan looked toward Vanessa.

And the answer shocked everyone.

“Because your wife knows what happened to my brother.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

The room became colder.

Daniel looked at his wife.

“What is he talking about?”

May you like

For the first time that night…

Vanessa looked truly afraid.
