Chapter 3: The Secrets They Hid

Three days after the wedding that never happened, Amy received an unexpected package.

No return address.

Only her name.

Inside was a small envelope.

And a handwritten letter.

Her hands froze when she saw the handwriting.

It was Maverick’s.

But the letter wasn’t an apology.

It was a confession.

Amy,

I know you will hate me after reading this.

Maybe you should.

But you deserve to know the truth.

The night before the wedding, I found out something about Penelope.

Something she had been hiding for years.

Amy frowned.

She continued reading.

Penelope wasn’t just my affair.

She was planning this from the beginning.

Amy stopped breathing.

A second envelope fell from the package.

Inside was a collection of messages.

Old messages.

Between Maverick and Penelope.

The first message was dated eighteen months earlier.

Before the engagement.

Before the wedding plans.

Before Amy ever suspected anything.

Penelope:

"She trusts me completely."

Maverick:

"That's why this will work."

Amy’s fingers began shaking.

They hadn’t just betrayed her.

They had planned it.

Penelope had spent years pretending to be her friend while secretly trying to destroy her life.

But why?

The answer came from the final message.

Penelope:

"She has everything I never had."

Maverick:

"You mean the money?"

Penelope:

"The family. The respect. The future."

Amy stared at the screen.

Suddenly, every strange moment made sense.

The comments.

The small insults disguised as jokes.

The times Penelope made her doubt herself.

The times she quietly compared their lives.

It was never friendship.

It was jealousy.

That afternoon, Amy met Penelope at a quiet café.

Penelope looked exhausted.

She looked smaller.

Broken.

“I know why you’re here,” Penelope whispered.

Amy placed the messages on the table.

“Why?”

Penelope closed her eyes.

“Because I hated you.”

The honesty shocked Amy.

Penelope continued.

“Not because you hurt me.”

“Because you never had to hurt me.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You were always loved.”

Amy said nothing.

“I watched everyone celebrate you.”

Penelope laughed bitterly.

“You had the perfect family. The perfect career. The perfect man.”

Amy looked at her.

“No.”

Penelope looked up.

“No?”

“I had someone I trusted.”

Amy slowly pushed the messages back toward her.

“And you destroyed that.”

Penelope started crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Amy stood.

“I believe you regret it.”

A pause.

“But regret is not the same as redemption.”

May you like

And then Amy walked away.

This time, she did not look back.
