Chapter 3: The Enemy Within

The doctor stabilized the baby's heartbeat just long enough for transport.
An ambulance couldn't be called.
Too risky.
Adrian ordered his armored convoy to head toward his private medical facility.
Emma refused to leave the baby's side.
Inside the moving SUV, she held the child's tiny hand while the doctor monitored his pulse.
Adrian sat across from them without saying a word.
Finally, Emma broke the silence.
"Who would do this?"
Adrian stared out the window.
"My brother."
Emma blinked.
"I buried him five years ago."
The convoy suddenly screeched to a halt.
Gunfire erupted from the rooftops.
Bullets shattered the armored windows but failed to penetrate.
Smoke grenades rolled across the street.
Masked attackers emerged from every direction.
The lead vehicle exploded.
Adrian calmly drew his pistol.
"They're here for him."
He wasn't talking about himself.
He was looking at the baby.
One of the attackers shouted through a loudspeaker.
"Hand over the child, Romano!"
Emma looked at Adrian in disbelief.
"Why would anyone risk this for a baby?"
Adrian closed his eyes for a brief moment.
May you like
"Because he isn't just my son."
"He is the only witness left."
