Hannah’s hands flew across the keyboard.
Sophie stayed beside Gabriel.
Peter struggled to remain conscious.
Marcus held Victor at gunpoint.
Vincent looked at the screen.
Files began populating.
Names.
Photographs.
Accounts.
Private records.
Thousands.

“Can you stop it?”
Hannah shook her head.
“Not from this terminal alone.”
Gabriel looked around.
“There were two authorization stations.”
“Dad never trusted one operator.”
“Where’s the second?”
Gabriel pointed toward a wall.
“Behind the portrait.”
Vincent ripped down a painting of Charles Hale.
Behind it was another console.
Password required.
Vincent tried family codes.
Denied.
Gabriel tried dates.

Victor laughed.
“You’re going to watch your father burn down everything he built.”
Vincent ignored him.
Sophie stared at the second console.
Then at the silver pendant.
“Lighthouse.”
Vincent looked at her.
“What?”
“Dad said the lighthouse keeper hid the flame where nobody would look.”
Gabriel understood first.
“Charles’s portrait.”
Vincent looked at the fallen painting.
A tiny metal plate was mounted on the back.
He pulled it free.

The first four coordinate groups from Daniel’s watch.
Vincent entered them.
Access granted.

Two options appeared.
PURGE.
RELEASE.
Vincent frowned.
“No filter.”
Hannah called from the desk.
“I have to create it here.”
“You have to authorize it there.”
“What do I select?”
“Neither yet.”

Victor suddenly moved.
He grabbed Marcus’s injured wrist.
Marcus fired.
The bullet hit the ceiling.
Victor slammed him into the desk.
Peter threw himself at Victor.
All three fell.
Gabriel pulled Sophie farther away.
Vincent moved to help.
Hannah shouted.
“DON’T!”
Vincent stopped.

“If you leave that console, authorization resets.”
Marcus hit Victor with the gun.
Victor kicked Peter’s injured shoulder.
Peter cried out.
Sophie screamed.
Vincent remained at the console.

He did not.

Hannah typed.
“Daniel built a partition protocol.”
“He called it Bluebird.”
Sophie looked up.
“My mom’s nickname.”
Hannah’s eyes filled.

Hannah whispered.

Victor finally broke free from Marcus.
He ran toward the door controls.
Gabriel intercepted him.
Victor punched Gabriel hard.
Gabriel collapsed.
Sophie ran toward her uncle.
Victor grabbed her.
Again.
Vincent’s composure broke.
“Victor!”
Victor pulled Sophie toward the shattered window.
Wind rushed into the room.
Forty-nine floors below, Manhattan glowed.
“Release the console.”
Vincent stared.
“Let her go.”
“Release it.”

Hannah stopped typing.
Marcus tried to move.
Victor lifted Sophie closer to the broken glass.
“No one moves.”
Sophie was crying now.
Vincent looked at the console.
One hand remained on biometric authorization.
If he released it, the system reset.
The archive would upload.
If he stayed, Victor might kill Sophie.
Evelyn watched through the screen.
Her face was calm.
“Choose, Vincent.”
There it was.
The Hale family legacy in one moment.
Empire or person.
Secrets or child.
Reputation or life.
Vincent lifted his hand from the scanner.
Hannah gasped.
AUTHORIZATION LOST.
SYSTEM RESET.

Victor smiled.
“Good.”
Sophie suddenly stopped crying.
She looked at Vincent.
Then at Victor.
“Dad was right.”
Victor frowned.
“What?”
“Rich men always think the important thing is money.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
Sophie pulled Daniel’s pendant from her pocket.
She had recovered it from the floor.
She pressed the hidden point.
A tiny metal spring shot outward.
Not enough to hurt anyone.
Enough to startle.
Victor flinched.
Sophie dropped to the floor.
Marcus fired.
The bullet struck Victor’s shoulder.
He spun away from the broken window.
Gabriel grabbed Sophie.
Vincent slammed his hand back onto the console.

AUTHORIZATION RESTORED.
Hannah screamed.
“Select PURGE!”
Vincent did.
The console asked:
PURGE WHICH CATEGORY?
Four choices.
Vincent stared.
Hannah shouted.
“PROTECTED PERSONS AND PRIVATE NONCRIMINAL!”
He selected both.

Another prompt.
RELEASE VERIFIED CRIMINAL EVIDENCE TO FEDERAL SECURE SERVER?
Vincent looked at Hannah.
“Yes!”
He selected RELEASE.

Final authorization required.
TWO HALE FAMILY BIOMETRICS.
Vincent stared.
Gabriel was across the room holding Sophie.
“Gabriel!”
His brother saw the screen.
He understood.
Gabriel ran.
Victor grabbed his ankle.
Gabriel fell.

Vincent left the console for one second.
Dragged Victor away.
Gabriel reached the scanner.
He placed his hand beside Vincent’s.

ERROR.
GABRIEL HALE STATUS: DECEASED.
Vincent’s face went white.

Gabriel laughed helplessly.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
Sophie shouted.
“THE RING!”
Vincent looked at Daniel’s black ring on the floor.
Lighthouse symbol.
Peter had said Daniel gave it to someone he trusted.
But it had originally belonged to Peter’s Bellgrave access group.
Vincent grabbed it.
Pressed it against the secondary scanner.

ADMINISTRATOR OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.
EXECUTE?
Vincent hit YES.

The screens went black.
Silence.
Then one line appeared.
BLUEBIRD PROTOCOL COMPLETE.
Hannah began crying.
Marcus lowered his weapon.
Gabriel leaned against the desk.
Sophie ran to her mother.
Victor lay bleeding on the floor.
Alive.
Defeated.
Evelyn’s video disappeared.
Vincent stared at the dark monitor.
Then another message appeared.
One Daniel Carter had programmed months earlier.

Vincent read the sentence twice.
Then police breached the office doors.
Victor was arrested.
Peter was carried out.
Marcus followed under medical care.
Sophie and Hannah stayed together.
Gabriel stood beside Vincent.
Fourteen years after his disappearance, the brothers looked out over Manhattan from the office of the father who had destroyed both their lives.
Gabriel finally spoke.
“What happens now?”
Vincent looked at the Hale name carved into the glass wall.
“Now we stop protecting it.”
But three hundred miles away, Evelyn Hale stepped off a private plane.
She opened a laptop.
The Bluebird Protocol had released the criminal evidence to federal investigators.
Nearly everything connected to Bellgrave was contained.

Evelyn opened one final folder.
PROJECT NORTH — PRIMARY.
She smiled.
Then called someone.
“Vincent thinks he found the truth.”
A man answered.
“And?”
Evelyn looked out at the dark runway.
“He found the version his father wanted him to find.”
The man was silent.
Evelyn closed the laptop.
