Chapter 13 - THE FORTY-NINTH FLOOR

Hale Meridian headquarters was evacuated before midnight.

Police sealed three surrounding blocks.

Vincent entered through a service garage with Gabriel and a federal tactical team.

Marcus remained missing.

Victor remained missing.

Hannah.

Sophie.

Peter.

All believed inside.

The north tower elevator stopped at forty-eight.

The forty-ninth floor required an old mechanical key.

Gabriel laughed softly when Vincent mentioned it.

“Dad never trusted electronic locks.”

“Where’s the key?”

“In his office.”

“Which is behind the locked door.”

“Exactly.”

Vincent stared.

Gabriel smiled.

“Dad enjoyed circular problems.”

They climbed the maintenance stairs.

At floor forty-nine, the door was reinforced steel.

A lighthouse symbol had been carved beside the lock.

Vincent touched Sophie’s pendant.

The empty star.

He examined its longest point.

Then twisted.

A tiny metal key slid out.

Gabriel stared.

“Daniel.”

Vincent inserted it.

The lock opened.

The floor beyond had been untouched for six years.

Charles Hale’s private kingdom.

Dark wood.

Black marble.

Old photographs.

No computers visible.

At the far end stood a single office.

Light beneath the door.

Vincent signaled the tactical team.

They moved.

The office door opened before they reached it.

Victor Shaw stepped out.

He held Sophie in front of him.

A gun pressed against her side.

Vincent stopped.

Sophie’s face was streaked with tears.

But she was standing.

Alive.

Victor smiled.

“Right on time.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

Victor moved the gun.

“Don’t.”

Gabriel stopped.

Vincent’s voice was quiet.

“Where is Hannah?”

“Inside.”

“Peter?”

“Inside.”

“Marcus?”

Victor’s smile changed.

“Also inside.”

Vincent looked at Sophie.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

Victor tightened his grip.

“I asked her not to do that.”

Vincent’s eyes hardened.

“Take your hand off her.”

“You really do keep issuing orders in rooms you don’t control.”

Victor backed into Charles’s office.

Vincent and Gabriel followed.

The tactical team could not get a clear shot.

Inside, Hannah sat beside a massive wooden desk.

Her hands were tied.

Peter sat on the floor.

Pale but conscious.

Marcus knelt near the window.

Blood ran from his forehead.

The metal archive case stood open on the desk.

Inside were six encrypted drives.

Vincent looked at Marcus.

“So you did bring it here.”

Marcus gave him a weak smile.

“Hannah needed the master terminal.”

Victor laughed.

“And I needed Marcus to believe I had no idea where he was going.”

Marcus looked disgusted.

“You tracked the case.”

“Of course.”

Victor tapped the black ring.

Darren’s ring.

A transmitter had been hidden inside.

Vincent realized.

The ring Sophie had carried from the lake.

They had brought Victor directly to them.

Victor looked at Peter.

“Family loyalty makes people predictable.”

Peter stared at him.

“You murdered my son.”

Victor shrugged.

“I gave him choices.”

Hannah screamed.

Vincent said, “Enough.”

Victor looked toward the desk.

“Do you know what your father built here?”

“A kill switch.”

Gabriel answered.

Victor smiled.

“More elegant than that.”

He touched the desk.

“Every Bellgrave backup.”

“Every duplicate.”

“Every encrypted copy distributed through Hale Meridian shell servers.”

“All controlled from this room.”

Vincent looked at Gabriel.

“You said the archive was physical.”

“The original was.”

Gabriel nodded toward the drives.

“Dad digitized portions later.”

Victor continued.

“Daniel discovered the system.”

“He wanted to use it to preserve the criminal evidence while deleting protected identities.”

“Hannah knows the filter.”

“Hence our reunion.”

Vincent looked at Hannah.

“Can you do it?”

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Victor smiled.

“She can.”

“Which is why she will.”

Vincent frowned.

“You want the evidence preserved?”

Victor laughed.

“No.”

“I want every file connected to me deleted.”

“Then I want Charles Hale’s material released.”

Gabriel stared.

“Why?”

“Because the Hale family collapses.”

“Hale Meridian collapses.”

“Markets panic.”

“Governments investigate.”

“And while everyone watches Vincent burn, I disappear.”

Vincent finally understood.

Victor was not trying to survive the scandal.

He was trying to weaponize it.

“You want to destroy the company.”

Victor shook his head.

“I want to destroy your name.”

His voice sharpened.

“For fourteen years, I stood beside you.”

“I rebuilt the company.”

“I took meetings while you mourned.”

“I fixed your mistakes.”

“And every magazine still called me Vincent Hale’s lieutenant.”

Vincent stared.

“This is about being second?”

“No.”

Victor’s face twisted.

“It is about building half an empire and owning none of the legend.”

Gabriel laughed.

“That may be the saddest motive I’ve heard in fourteen years of captivity.”

Victor swung the gun toward him.

Sophie reacted.

She stomped hard on Victor’s foot.

He cursed.

She dropped.

Vincent lunged.

A shot exploded.

Glass shattered.

Marcus tackled Victor from the side.

Gabriel grabbed Sophie.

The tactical team entered.

Victor fired again.

Peter pulled Hannah down.

Vincent struck Victor.

The gun slid beneath the desk.

Marcus grabbed it.

“DON’T MOVE!”

Victor froze.

For one moment, it seemed finished.

Then Evelyn Hale’s voice came through the room speakers.

“Not yet.”

Everyone looked up.

A screen descended from the ceiling.

Evelyn appeared on video.

She was not in custody.

Vincent stared.

“How?”

Victor laughed.

Even he seemed surprised.

Evelyn looked directly at Vincent.

“You keep forgetting who taught your father how to protect a family.”

The office doors locked.

Red lights appeared across the ceiling.

Gabriel whispered.

“She triggered the master purge.”

Hannah ran to the terminal.

A hidden panel opened beneath the desk.

Old monitors lit.

A countdown began.

05:00.

04:59.

04:58.

Vincent looked at Hannah.

“What happens at zero?”

She typed rapidly.

“All Bellgrave data is destroyed.”

“That sounds good.”

“No.”

Hannah looked at him.

“She changed the purge.”

“It’s not deleting the archive.”

“It’s uploading it.”

Vincent stared.

“Where?”

May you like

Hannah’s face went white.

“Everywhere.”
