Chapter 4 — The House That Finally Slept

Six months later, the little house looked different.

Fresh paint covered the cracked walls.

Flowers bloomed beneath the front windows.

For the first time in years...

No one feared the sound of a key turning in the front door.

Emily stood in the kitchen preparing breakfast while sunlight streamed through the windows.

Lily ran downstairs laughing, clutching a brand-new teddy bear she had chosen herself.

"Mama," she smiled, "I didn't have any bad dreams last night."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

She knelt and hugged her daughter tightly.

"You never have to be afraid again."

Later that morning, Detective Marcus Hale arrived carrying a small evidence box.

Inside was the tiny hidden camera that had changed their lives.

"The case is over," he said gently. "David accepted a plea agreement. He'll be serving a long prison sentence."

Emily looked at the device for a long moment before quietly closing the box.

"I don't need this anymore."

That afternoon, she and Lily walked together to the neighborhood park.

Children laughed.

Birds sang.

The air felt lighter than either of them could remember.

As the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, Lily reached for her mother's hand.

"Is it over?"

Emily smiled—a real smile that had been missing for years.

"Yes, sweetheart."

"It finally is."

For the first time since the storms had begun...

The little house slept peacefully.

And no one ever needed to watch it again.
