Chapter 3 — Twenty-One Months of Evidence

David rushed toward the ceiling.
His trembling hands ripped the smoke detector from its mount.
Plastic shattered across the floor.
He stared at the tiny hidden camera inside.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
Emily slowly picked up the broken device.
She noticed a tiny company logo printed beside the lens.
Then she remembered.
Almost two years earlier...
After neighbors repeatedly reported violent arguments, the local Domestic Violence Response Program had quietly offered Emily emergency protection.
She had refused.
She had been too afraid.
Too ashamed.
She thought nothing had happened afterward.
She had been wrong.
Because another person had accepted.
Mrs. Eleanor Brooks.
The elderly widow who lived directly across the street.
She had heard every scream.
Every crash.
Every desperate cry.
She had secretly allowed investigators to install remote cameras focused on the exterior of the house while Emily's smoke detector had been replaced during what appeared to be a routine safety inspection.
Everything had been legal.
Everything had been documented.
Every violent outburst.
Every drunken night.
Every bruise Emily had tried to hide.
The front door burst open.
Police officers entered with weapons lowered but ready.
David pointed wildly toward the ceiling.
"They were spying on me!"
One detective calmly replied,
"No.
We were documenting your crimes."
The handcuffs clicked around David's wrists.
He didn't resist.
He already knew there was nowhere left to run.
As officers escorted him outside into the pouring rain, dozens of neighbors silently watched from their windows.

Could no longer frighten anyone.
